What are some nice spots on the gold coast for a southerly?

I just got back from the golf course (Tweed river), wind was gusty as hell, and had to swim the gear out 50m just to get enough wind to waterstart. Once over the eastern end of the river I was overpowered on a 5.0 and 84 litre board!

Are there any spots that work well in a Southerly (with maybe a tiny bit of west in it) that are south of Shearwater? The train doesn't work in that direction. What's Miami like?

Hey curac,

The trouble is that some spots that look good on a map aren't necessarily all that good in real life... google earth doesn't show things like high rises that chop up the wind, and it doesn't show currents or shallow oyster-infested beds!

Coupled with my kookiness means I'm hesitant to go somewhere new without someone looking out for me

hit a beach. they don't have oysters. go miami or nobbies. even narrow neck. (although that might be fked by the high rises but if its more south i don't think it will be a problem).
and don't worry about safety its the goldy there are always people looking so if you get smashed once everyone stops laughing and realise something is wrong chances are someone will get life saver guy thing. and you got helicopters and jet skis doing passes all the time.
its one safe place.
I did what your doing for ages. trying to find people to sail with. i gave up in the end and just went where ever

Would have been there but had to drop off a friend at the train station... right in the middle of the windiest day since Christmas. And when I get there her friend was there as well, but she "doesn't want to drive on the freeway". WTF??? I mean it's not that hard, sit in the left hand lane and do the speed limit, how hard is that?
Same again tomorrow as well

We did have a blast at the train today particulary if you stay on the seaworld side, you can rig on the grass at seaworld carpark or go further down near that old barge on the beach hit 34.5knts on the gps in very dogey conditions but when the gusts came yipee! As you said had to swim 50m back to the beach zero wind on that side......chairman it must have been nuts at shearwater!

You were there at about 5pm Tony? seemed to be scooting along in the fading light- I turned up at about 5.15pm at shearwater but realised there probably wasn't enough time to rig and sail- even though it was still howling. was the wind constant up there?
