The guy at the store tried to tell me that if I am getting two new sails, then I should get two new masts. Something about the flex characteristic of each length of mast.

Sounds like a lot of money and a lot of stuff to carry around to me.

Do separate masts really perform that differently to mast extensions?

Thanks,
Harrow.

you want.
4 boards.
5 wave sails
4 freeride sails
3 speed sails
3 std dia masts
2 skinny masts
3 booms
2 mast extns for each dia mast.
4 bases
2 fins for each board

the rest of your money, will just be wasted.

best winds

Tony,

Thanks for the good advice. The scary thing is that I'm not that far off your recommendation!
Unfortunately it's all '80s crap.

depends on the sails type and size!
if it is for a 6.5m2 race sail and a 4m2 wave sail then you could usually use the same
if it is for two sails not hugely different in size and with same program then you definitely need 2 masts.

or the reverse

Mate...go to a different shop pleeeaaase!

U don't need 2 differnt masts for 2 sails unless ur getting a 10m and a 4m sail.

This sounds awfully like a Neil Pryde shop...am I right?

Tell me what u want to achieve with ur gear and I'll give u good advice as to what u should be looking for...

Paul.

just buy some damn gear and go sailing you will learn everything from time on the water, and only get confused by everyones point of view on what you should buy.

kitingkook,

Haa, haa, yes you are right. I have been waiting for an email like yours.

But since it is going to cost about $4,000 to get everything, I don't want to stuff it up. (Bringing up a family of five on a single income with a Sydney size mortgage.)

Anyway, have pretty much worked it all out, with much thanks to this forum. Tomorrow I'm off to get a new set of roof-racks, following week-end I'm taking a demo board home to confirm my decision, and should be kitted out the next week! Licking my lips just thinking about it.

Thanks all,
Harrow.

Why don't you buy second hand gear. A lot of guys rotate there stuff each year. If you buy off a guy that doesn't sail too hard the gear will be almost brand new and 1/2 the price. The shops will love me for that advice but too bad, its true.

Whatever you choose you will have fun Harrow,
Just check out some secondhand prices so you know what you are getting into.

You can buy new 05 boards for about $1200 if you look hard enough. REAL Second hand you can get one for $500 or less.
http://www.windsurfingperth.com.au/boards/used.html
just check out the above link to see what type of deal ur getting.

I would say you don't need two masts if your sail size range is close together.

I got one mast (An old Fibre spar (6 yrs old)) which is 410cm (i think) and that does me from a 3.5 right up to a 5.7. I spent $80 on a decent mast extension.

You dont need to spend gazillions. Why dont you spend two grand on a nearly new setup and spend another two grand next year when you've worked out what you really really really need.
Only a top pro could tell the difference. And they are usually stoned.

I really really really need a new starboard Evo. But i'll be buggered if I'll let the ****heads take two grand out my pocket for one. Got my eye on a nice second hander for $800 though :).

Must...control...urge...to.......buy

Do not buy anything new, its just a crazy waste of money especially if you have been out of the scene so long. I have managed to get everything I need second hand, and it is all great gear. From what it sounds like you should be able to kit yourself out just fine for around 2K. Get 1 slalom board $600-900, 1 boom $150, 2 sails $250-300ea, a mast $150 a mast ext $150. Anything after 2000 should pretty good stuff.

It doesn't sound like you wanna be competitive so don't get sucked into the shop spiel about what you need.

Geez if you were in Perth I could sort you out with adequate gear for your needs for about $1K

garynoel,

Thanks for the link, but it just confirmed what I already thought. The limited market in Sydney inevitably means higher prices. Second hand boards seem to be up to double those prices, thus my decision to probably buy new.

Thanks anyways.

C'mon guys give the shops a go where would we be without our local shops, we'd be without free advice, a cool place to hang when theres no wind, no boards look at and no sails to get the shop assitants to un-roll and roll up at our mercy and no second hand gear cos no-one would be selling second hand stuff cos ther wouldnt be new stuff.
Harrow if it is a price problem with new just do as everyone says get some good second hand stuff and spend more next year when you know what type of sailing you want to do waves or freeride. Also make sure you get a good price at whatever shop you purchase from cos no-one is buying gear much this year as there hasnt been much wind in sydney so im sure theres some kit the shops would love to sell.

I'm happy to buy new. I don't begrudge anyone making a decent living, and besides, the second hand gear has to start somewhere.

I treat my stuff well, so I would expect it to last me basically forever. In the past I've bought 3 boards second hand, and one new. The first three still look 2nd hand, and the last one still looks new.

(Anyone want to buy an Astrotoy in as new condition. )

Harrow what gear and sizes are you looking at getting, this helps people answer your questions a bit better plus you might get some good suggestions/reviews.

mkseven,

I thought I'd already driven everybody nuts getting advice on my upcoming purchase.

I'm thinking of a JP X-cite 105 litre (FWS), ~5.7 camless freeride sail (such as NP Saber or NS Natural), 50% carbon mast. I figure I'll get something like a 6.8 a little down the track.

I'm 65kg medium skill flatwater sailor, who will have the occasional go in the ocean when the swell is < 2 ft.

Regards,
Harrow.

Since you are so light if your 5.7 fits a 430 mast you will easily get away with using that mast on a 6.8 (short luff such as saber) you might need a second bigger extension but they arent worth much (plenty of 2nd hand ones around). You will probably find that the 6.8 works better for you with the shorter mast

Hey Harrow,

I use a 430 mast on a 5.8 (0 extension and the turban extended about 5cm) and on a 7.4 (with 22.5cm of extension). I reckon that's pretty good range, and am thinking about filling in the gap with a 6.5 at some stage. However, with the amazing range of modern sails, the gap is nearly covered, by powering up the 5.8 / depowering the 7.4, but not quite the same as a neutrally set up 6.5. However, the 6.5 would definitely be a luxury, not a necessity. Also, with your weight, I don't think you'll cover 1.6 sq m gap between sails as comfortably as my 100kg does.

I'd actually reconsider moving up a fraction in sail sizes:ie:
Buy a 430 mast to rig a 6m and 7m comfortably.

or

go the other way and buy a 400 mast to rig both a 4.8 and 5.8 sail.

(PS - be a man and go big - modern sails depower wonderfully)

The choice will depend on how/where you want to sail, and what board you choose.

If you're really good, you'll then buy a boom which supports both sails at it's minimum/maximum extension. Then you'll have a great, economical setup (until the bug bites deeper and you want a third sail).
