I have asked this before but got no reply so bare with me.

With all these (unusual)strong Easterlies in Perth at the moment I was wondering what they are like to sail in... e.g. are they a constant wind or are they crap? Also, does anyone ever sail just on the east side of point walter? Seems like a good spot when the east wind is blowin (and you suck like me and want to be blown into shore if required), just hope there are no rocks etc that are going to ruin what pitiful amounts of gear I have.

Many thanks in advance.

Haven't sailed in a Perth easterlies for ages. but here in Mandurah they are fairly steady. I imagine as long as the wind has been blowing down the river for a good distance (over a kilometer or so) it should be OK.
I've sailed Point Walter, but it's so long ago I can't remember what direction the wind was. I don't think there's any rocks on the east side, but there may be on the west.

Thanks mate, thats all I wanted to know. I got on google earth just to see what angle an ENE wind hits the beach (I know, I'm a nerd) and Its kind of side on which for most people wouldn't be an issue but I still like my safety blanket of an onshore wind untill I have a clue what I'm doing. :)

Ahh I see a speller like me, I always use 2 "ls" on until it just looks wrong with only 1. But that's the way spellcheck says it should be so I go along with it.

Yep, onshore is safest, especially if you're not sure of yourself yet.
You surprise me though I thought ENE wouldn't be too bad there.

Strangely enough I did look at that "untill" and thought that doesn't look right, and then I went right on ignoring it.

At Pelican Pt, if your up near the boat ramp, its really side on in a ENE, and kind of protected in the shallows (which is where I hang out mostly)

Eastern side of the Pt Walter jetty is too shallow for a long way... on a low tide it can be a 150m walk to where u can start sailing...... and that is not even with hi aspect ratio race fins.

Much more friendly at the park straight off the end of Ardross St in AppleX.

BUT if you come back too far downwind it is a long walk. You only have about 60-80m of downwind available.

I guess another worry at Pt walter is that it has become extremely popular with kiter's. The little blighter's are everywhere...amazing really two years ago at first light you would be alone, now its packed.

Pt walter itself needs a direct easterly to work properly, North East and the wind gets broken by the Headland on the other side of the river (Dalkieth maybe)
There are also lots of hidden razor rocks and shallow water. Often fun to watch the newbie kiter's get ripped apart here.

NE is better at Attadale foreshore. Cross on and cleaner wind. Often stronger and cleaner as it doesnt get broken up by the other side of the river. Always choppy. Good on an east too, which is cross shore.

Majestic point is also good, on East or Nor East. Set up and sail from the jetty there.

South east is a dud wind, you could probably ride on the river at these spots but its so gusty, forget it. If its strong and your desperate try woodies.

Pelli is also another spot for an Easterly, but i cant give you a decent lowdown on it as never kited there on an East.

Pelli Point is ok in an easterly.

Works in SE, but you have to navigate around the moored boats sometimes.

If there's any north in it, you have to schlog out a bit to get beyond the wind shadow of the point. But it's good once you manage to get out the back. And don't worry about it being offshore... it's not like the ocean where you get blown to Africa if you break anything.

Me and windsurfing247 sailed an eastery at sunset beach in Rockingham the weekend before last.
We had to go right out (too far) but got about an hour of sailing in.
I was on a 7.0m and Jonno a 6.5m

DL I have noticed that I have a magnetism to those Moored boats, don't know what it is but I always seem to head in their general direction, I must have a metal plate in the board that I don't know about. I tried AppleX for the first time the other week. There is only one boat moored there and I still seemd to spend a large portion of my time trying to avoid it.

Dont look at things you dont want to run into, if you are heading towards a mored boat, concerntrate your focus at the clear water between the obsticles, like where there is nothing to hit, it works big time try it.

Hope it helps.

yes what is with the abundence of kiters at pointwalter in easterlys these days wasnt really enuff wind for me to windsurf on sunday so took my 505 out from freshie bay yacht club only to be engulfed in kiters
your fine preety much right up the the spit most of the way along point walter except for the first bit from 50m east of jetty and then along till where it submerges there are rocks but you can get within like 10 to 15m really compfortably on a seabreeze at the end of spit plus that section is on a better down wind angle aswell
