Has anybody tried any of the equipment bags designed to go on top of roof racks like these at windsurfing sales

http://www.windsurfingsales.com.au/products/bags/

I'm going for a bit of a trip to Victoria at Xmass time and am thinking about carrying my sails on the roof to keep them out of the trouble and strifes way . Also interested in how anybody locks boards and gear onto roof racks ? I have a set of Rhino sports racks (SXB2)

Have the mast bag (takes 3) was stunned with the build, didn’t expect it to be of such good quality material, or such a good design, taking into account the price of the item.

Don’t know about security on top of the vehicle. Its a woven canvas type fabric, but still can be cut away.

There was something on Forums ages ago from the UK that allowed items to be locked to roof racks, but even those (roof racks) can be removed in a few seconds. Not a good solution to leave them un-attended.

But the bags, top gear and an affordable price

Haggar,

I have been looking at lockable roof boxes long enough to take sails up to around 8m2 (ie. 2.2m boom). Rola and Thule, etc make them.

If you are driving a station wagon you can just chuck the equipment bag into the car if you are going to leave it. (Not an option if you are driving a sedan though.)

There are some lockable steel cable tie-downs that you can get as well for boards. Not sure how secure they are?

Regards,
Harrow.

Haggar, cant help you with a location in Brissy, but I was at a showroom here in Perth the other day and they had lockable tie down straps for surf style racks.
Cant remember the brand (sorry not being much help) but they had two high strength stainless wires running through the strap so they are extremely difficult to cut and they have locking mechanisms that prevent the strap being released.
worth seeking out, if you intend to leave the gear on top of the car while you are away from it.

Hi Haggar, I use a Neil Pryde bag. 3 masts, 3 booms and 5 sails all jam in pretty well. Straps go through the bag over the masts and secure pretty well. It could be locked on but I take it off and stick it in the car (wagon) when I'm not around as I've been ripped off before. The real shame is that generally only sailors would know whats in it!

Thanks guys for all your feedback.

I'm leaning towards a bag like the loft one at this stage.
grumplestiltskin, I think you must have seen these http://www.stickprotection.com/pro_surf.htm looks like these retail for between $70 and $80. I could also use something like a combination chain that you lock up a push bike with and pass this through a locked bracket on mast track or fin box. I agree nothing is theft proof and if you do leave stuff for some time, best to lock stuff in the car.

On a related note, regarding locking down equipment:

- make sure your roof racks have locks on the clamp mechanism (I have had people try to take the racks themselves...)

- You can now get lockable tie-down straps (I have seen them in SHQ Melbourne and at Bunnings Hardware stores). I'm not sure how tight they are as I haven't tried them...

- Hardware stores also stock a lockable-cable thing, which is popular with tradesmen that lock ladders to roof bars.

- I personally use the plastic-coated steel cable with a couple of padlocks -> wrap the cable through the footstrap, then around the roof rack. It is still possible to unscrew the footstrap, but then cable-cutters are also possible...

Every now and again when I travel I use this lock designed for a laptop pc, mde by targus. Its a stainless steel cable that extends out off(retractable) and locks back into a little black box with a combination lock, which also has an alarm in it. You can use it without the alarm or set the sensitivy of the alarm for movement. So if someone tries to tamper the alarm goes off and then they still need to hack the cable.

Has anyone seen the stainless steel net things in the shops? I know they area available for backpacks - maybe a larger one of those is a lightweight non slashing solution. And let's face it - if they want to take it they will - you just have to make it look hard enough that someone will see them doing it cos it is taking longer - hence they might not try.
Good luck
