As most equipment has a serial number, Boards, sails, masts even carbon booms. What I do is when I purchase a new piece of gear I break out the trusty digital camera and take a photo of the serial number etc.
I then upload this on my P.C where I have a collection. Burn a CD with the pics and leave it at work or somewhere safe.

When your bored at work you can make a collage of all your toys

If the worst occurs you have all the details.

Also good for other valuables and simplifies making an insurance claim.

It's funny, but I had assumed every body had been doing this anyway.
I take picks of all may equipment - first an overal picture of it then a macro of the serial No.. I don't just limit it to W/S equipment either, I do it fo all our belongings, bikes, TV's, HiFi componets etc everything well almost havent taken a picture of my camera yet hehe...

If you are placing of the camera in front of mirror, setting timer and turning off of the flash you will also be having picture of your camera for safe of the keeping as well

Thanks Kremlin
Taking a picture of the serial No' could still be a little tricky - but with enough mirrors could probably do someting. Maybe you have some spy cameras from the local KGB disposal store I could borrow?

If you want to lock down your gear to the roofracks here is a good website that sells lockable straps it says on the site it is quicker to cut through roofracks than the strap.

I've got some of these straps (in 4m length) and they are good, although the need to jigget the jaws a bit to get the lock to turn.
