I still cant get over this......
Driving home from work yesterday arvo along Mona Vale Rd (runs through 2 national parks) I was following the car in front. There were a young couple in it, not on P's, both puffing away on ciggies.
They were ashing out the windows which is bad enough but then they just chucked the still lit butts out the window. I couldnt believe it
I flashed my hi beams at the car only to recieve the usual middle finger salute.
I was so pissed off. I managed to pull alongside them and gave them a huge serve.
They both looked at me like I was mad. I said "havent you f****g tools seen the bush fires in Victoria?"
They didnt say a word, just drove off. I rang the cops but they said they couldnt do anything as they didnt witness it.
What the f*** is this world coming too???????????

Good work for giving them a serve mate.

If more people took idiots to task for their stupidity / inconsiderate behaviour, then this world would be a better place.

Green thumbs for you bro.

This is a huge gripe of mine, not only for the fire potential but also the littering aspect.

In Victoria we have an EPA number to call for littering which includes cig butts.

http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/litter/reporting_litter_from_a_car.asp

I see in NSW you may be able do a similar thing

www.environment.nsw.gov.au/pollution/wastelitter.htm

Ring the DECC and see if you can at least get them for the littering.

Your equivalent of dept of conservation and land management may be able to do something if your state has total fire bans for certain months like WA

I hear ya!
I just got back from a walk along the beach with the fam (no wind). saw 3 small burnt patches, deliberately lit going by the fact that they were very close to the bushes, and the area was fairly green (no way a tossed ciggy would start it, besides not near any roads, or pedestrian walkways). One of them was at the bottom of the access stairs to the beach, and about 50m in diameter...I'm starting to wish I have the opportunity to catch one in the act, then I can deliver them to the cop-shop personally...(via the emergency ward!)

Off topic...a local recently found relics of a whale skeleton (massive vertibrae & ribs) dislodged from a small landslip along the beach front, must be thousands of years old...walked to it this morn to show my kids, who've been asking to see it for weeks, and the f***en vandals have been there and smashed it up, broken pieces everywhere...where's the respect gone???

In cases like this, it's quite permissable to just shoot the buggers.

Clint Eastwood would do it!

(This is something I don't miss about Australia. You just don't get that kind of disrespectful attitude in Asia, or al least far less often.

Last time back in Oz I was really aware of a strong d!ckhe@d element; you could almost feel it in the air. Stupid people making racist comments about foreign visitors, vandalism, generally loutish behaviour, not to mention the healthy young blokes begging in the streets because they're too lazy to work and have spent their dole on drugs and drink...ok, that's my rant for the day, time to hit the beach!)

the police announced on the radio and TV that there was a hotline for reporting people who are flinging butts out the window, not sure how they claim they couldn't do anything about it?

I generalise here but smokers give me the ***s period. Apart from having to put up with the stench, the majority will drop their ash and butts on the ground. They're so used to doing it (their addiction) that I'm sure they don't even realise they're being dicks. It also really peeves me when I see parents smoking next to their kids, that should be outlawed.

I'm sure the two that flicked their butts out the window do it so often that they didn't even register their actions...morons. I did pick up a butt once that a guy threw out the window at a set of traffic lights and threw it back in their car[}:)]. They were peeved but to busy looking for the burning butt.

I could go on for pages but I'll hold my rant.

You can report cig butt throwers.

Register with DEC (www.dec.wa.gov.au) as a litter reporter. They will send out small postage pre-paid cards on which to report litterers, or reports can be done on-line once you are registered.

I can't stand it from the fire hazard and general littering aspect, but also because as a regular motorcyle rider (commute every day), you tend to cop them in the face / chest / lap if the car in front throws one.

They will receive a fine upon being reported, and I have heard from friends that the fines do get sent out. They can contest in court, but I've never heard of one going that far. You need to report the time / location / vehicle description and rego / and a brief description of the person littering. It also can be used for other litter from vehicles. On the motorbike I've nearly been hit by cans and plastic bottles. On the bike it also makes it easy to come up alongside the littering car and have a good look at the person who threw it.

Smoking should just be banned everywhere other than inside your own home... that and making packets so expensive no one can afford them.

On top of the fact that we'll be paying of their above-average health bills later.

It's a tough one: you want to let people lingering commit suicide if they choose to. On the other hand, you don't want others to have to foot the bill for it (health care, 2nd-hand smoking, env't, fires). Tough one.

I still think in that particular case, you should have pulled a Neddy on them. That's why I carry the proper tool in my car for.

The problem with smoking though is it certainly doesn't just affect you but everyone around you. Firstly you cant go to a pub without coming back smelling like a 'pack a day' smoker and also breathing in seconds it apparently worse for you than just smoking!!! they have tried by stopping smoking indoors etc, but they all just stand right outside anyway so it hasn't really achieved anything.

I still believe that like smoking anything else... doing drugs etc, are just as bad and same course of action should be taken. just because it cant kill you right that moment your having a puff, doesn't mean the long term affects should be taken into consideration. And some of the blokes at school start now because their convinced it's very 'cool' as such, even after everything you told... i just don't get it. really don't.

Still believe if they cant up the price of a packet, just make it illegal anywhere but in your home!!!

Poluting other people's air / environment IS imposing on THEIR rights.
I don't know how smokers ended up with more rights than non-smokers, but it is wrong.

Come on guys..... some of you are sounding like a bunch of grumpy old men. Where would the aussie digger have been without a cig. in the trenches....sharing one with their mate? No, I'm not a smoker, never have been. There's bloody idiots everywhere, they don't need to be smokers. Why is alchohol any different? Have a few too many and many loose control of all common sense they may have, putting other peoples lives at risk or generally just being royal pita's. I'd be just as pissed off as the next guy if I saw somebody throwing their butts out the window. I get just as pissed off when people throw their empty beer bottles out the window. It may not start a fire but it's still the wrong thing to do. I think if you want someone or something to blame look at society in general. And it's not getting any better. I think what's needed is a little bit of consideration for the next person.... for starters.

I'd better hit the trenches myself now.....

I have done the same thing. Fortunatly their suprise gives you time to get a head start! I've done the same to a carload of ferrals at Maccas who ditched all their packaging out of the window. I picked it up, emptied the contents of the coke cup on the bonnet then chucked it all back in the window. They just sat there gob smacked, which i'm thankful for.

I used to live in Terry Hills, just off Mona Vale Road.

In.... 1980(?) we had a giant bushfire that came up to our back fence, just before the wind changed. I still recall fleeing with the rest of the neighborhood and seeing 100ft flames out the car window down the end of the street.

These people =

Hey Panda, it was just past the turn off to Terry Hills as you go down the hill towards the tip turn off. Vegetation close on both sides of the road, just beggars belief that people would dump lit ciggie butts out the window.
I remember those fires, we were at a mates place in Warriewood Valley trying to save the houses. I remember just before the cops made us leave seeing the huge fire front come over the hill after it had hit up the escarpment. Scary ****!!!

As an aside I have recieved some info from the authorities. They have taken the details and recorded them. If anything comes of it (doubtful now) or in the future the owner of the car will get a visit

^ I lived right here (I see is a duplex now?).
The end of Nerang Ave was a wall of fire twice the height of the trees.

I remember my mum asked to keep a watch out for smoke while she had a sleep.
"Mum!"
"Is there smoke"
"No, there's fire!!!"

Mum bundled two kids and a baby into dad's little sportscar and bunny-hopped away! Everything was orange and it was raining embers. Very scary stuff.

All that said it was probably not as dangerous as all the funnel-webs. They were a regular guest in the pool. They were everywhere.

well, on Wed 2 weeks ago at midnight i caught some teens in the neighbours car, tackled one, he went in the blue lights car, hooray!

Last wed, same time caught a drugged up loser in another neighbours car, he smashed a bottle on my scone (slight black eye for me) so i went to work on him. he was so drugged up on something that when i kicked him fair in the nuts as hard as i could he didnt even feel it. took a while of punching n kneeing this sh%t bag to get him down, then all the street came out and helped hold it down while the cops came. he was a real mess, blood everywhere, all on the road, but still super aggressive.

Yay for our street, and yay for teaching a loser a quick lesson!!

oh yeah, ban the addictive substances in ciggies, easy.

Travel on a Sydney train and you will see all the signs of idiots who don't care or care about the wrong things.

Perhaps in 500 years time there will be a book or ebook that examines the causes of the decline and destruction of western civilization in the 21st century. Perhaps there will be another series of Grumpy old Men in a couple of years time.

if people think passive smoke doesnt injure others..think again

I think I can qualify for a rant against it.

my lungs are less than 50% capacity, virtually all my lungs are scarred [if not soley at least partially] due to passive smoke in clubs and pubs.

I have been a musician all my life ,my last gigging was as a Billy Joel style Piano man /singer. 3 nights a week work.[finally the bigtime] and 6 days of coughing continually from morning till 1 oclock arvo coughing up black and green tar like crap..only to go back in and start all over again..basically one day in the week I felt normal. When I was too sick I gave up 6 months advanced bookings...man I had finally made it only to be so sick I quit. A life's ambition up in smoke.

I now cannot walk up stairs or hills without puffing,I even tire on the flats, I cannot do manual stuff without running out of breath and of this year have sailed only once because the physical difficulty of carrying boards [13 to 15kg longboards] and rigging up has scared me off [fortunately lake sailing is ok if i dont fall in., I have to sail underpowered to do that] so the sailing is ok, its just the setup, Even the 1 3/4 hour drive to the lake for me, stuffs me out so I really have to sail the next day. I will start sailing again but I am now trying to move to a coastal location so its easier to just do it without effort of driving.I have bought a landsailer with the hope I can trailer it setup to a spot and still keep sailing.

but I wont give up yet...I will sail, it just takes more preparation.

So my life is f@kked because of smokers...I never smoked but I sure did choke.

So endeth the second reading.

Geez Rustbucket that really sucks man. Have you thought about suing for compensation in any way? Not to sound like I condone suing for the sake of it but yours sounds like a legitimate case of negligence on behalf of your employer. I'm also in a band and I am so thankful I am playing in an era of non smoking venues.

I pay taxes too, but I'm sure that smokers or anyone for that fact wouldn't appreciate me farting in their face. To me second hand smoke stinks just as bad but stuffs my lungs as well. If people want to kill themselves with cigarettes, fine, it's their choice. But they need to do it at home or away from other people...especially kids. Nothing **s me more than not being able enjoy alfresco dining because some smoker is legitimately polluting my air...it's wrong!
