Has anyone out there been to Fiji in July if so what was the wind and waves like and other extra curricular activities?

i have a month off and cant decide on going back to maui or chasing wind else where.

Does fiji get swell that time of year? i know Maui will be flattish and really want to score some waves!!!!!!

I have not been to Maui, but I think I would go there... Have been to Fiji. Was a bit of a flop last season... Plenty of time to kick back, have some bounty and do ...not much

Alternatively, wait a month or so longer and go to Gnaraloo

Fiji can be fickle from my experience. There's also the coral to worry about which can turn an otherwise windy day into a pain if the tide is out.

I've been for 4 weeks over 2 years and have seen quite a few days of no wind or light wind.

It can happen anywhere though I guess. I haven't been to Maui so I don't know how that rates.

I've made about 5 trips to Maui in July and overall it's been great. There was one trip with bad wind for about a week... I was forced to use a 6.5m sail, which the locals thought was appauling. Typicaly I used a 4.3 or 4.7. The only problem is Maui is not cheap. On the other hand Fiji is much cheaper, I had one trip and got 2 days wind out of 14. However my mate was there two weeks before my trip and it blew almost every day. From all the people I have spoken to you can't beat Maui for consistency. Also Maui is a mecca for gear rental, shops everywhere.

If you can afford it and want waves then go to Maui.

But don't hang around Honalulu. to dear.

get straight to maui and set up.

Fiji can be great sailing but flat water/bump and jump
but cheaper.

Do some research on other locations as many breaks are out off reach except by boat. Hiring a local boat may be the difference in cost.

If you want wind and wave in july in Hawaii, go to Oahu, Diammond Head. Maui is pretty windy but likely to be very flat. Diamond Head is a great port-tack spot, although it gets really crowded in July. Wind can be unreliable but it's the best month, so it's still pretty good.
cheers,

No waves in Maui in July BUT wind is very strong
Sailed most days on 4.5 some on 4.2 !
2 - 3 foot biggest waves we had at Hookipa just for one day

Mauritius not as windy, 4.7 to 5.4 most common sail sized for me (I weigh 90kg) but waves MASSIVE
6 days at mast high, 2 days at mast to mast and a half which was closing out across the channel, rest of the time head to logo high...
perfect bear away left handers with average of 10 - 12 cutbacks per wave
Many different breaks all dependent on ability... something for everyone, freestylers and speed freaks included

I go Mauritius many times, always wind and ALWAYS waves
Average temp 24 degrees
Water temp 20 degrees
Average wind 20 knots
Average swell 2.5 metres
Nothing else about Mauritius is average... It is AWESOME

is mauritius port or starboard tack??

yeah i know what Maui is like in July/August as i spent a month there 2 years ago. got some waves but wanted more. Plenty of wind though most days.

Didnt even think of diamond head that would be good to get some port tack practice. mmmm decisions decisions.....

Mauritius is opposite tack to Maui....

If you live in WA and want to go wavesailing in June-September, you got to have rocks in your head to go to Maui or Fiji instead of Mauritius. ITs an easy 7-8 hour direct flight for around 1600 bucks economy or 2100 in business, no hassles with geartransport. The hotel directly at the sailing spot cost us 105 A$ per day including B/F and dinner, no need to hire a car and the rum has to be tried to be beleived at around 10 bucks a bottle, beer at 8o cts each.
No waves in Maui in winter and difficult to access in Fiji unless you can afford Namotu....
Mauritius will challenge every wavesailor, intermediate or pro..

Strangely enough I think it could be ok there wind and wavewise as its just south of Marocco and there is some good wavesailing to be done there.... If all else fails take your best sandboard as there would be some great dunes. Just ask comrade Kremlin about sandboarding, he is the master of the stockton dunes, always making friends with the locals too I hear.....

hi windy miller
do you have more information on wavesailing conditions on cocos? how reliable wind is? how powerful the waves are? normal price accomodation at the spot?
just read that scotty mc kercher went there and the waves were huge.
i sailed gnaraloo and margrets over mast high, no problems with that... but there might be hardcore waves that are two difficult for me.
cheers from germany
