I have continuing problems with the tail of my board walking when using my larger sails (6.0 & 6.3).

I have a F2 274 (103L) with a 30cm fin in it. Matched with the 6.0 KA and in reasonable wind (18-20kts) the tail walks continuously.

Should I be using a smaller fin with the bigger sail to reduce the lift?

Is there a rule of thumb for matching fins with sails?

Any advise is appreciated

If you're tail walking it's a sure sign of too big a fin.

One of the fins main purpose, apart from horizontal stability is to help lift the board out of the water so that it keeps planing. The faster you go, the more it wants to exit the water .. thus .. lift .. too much lift and you're tail walking.

If you take the 6.0 out on a light day, a big 34cm fin might be the go to get the board on the plane, but you won't be 'flying' along because with a big fin like that it causes drag which slows you down. Lift don't come for free!

With 103L of volume, the board is pretty "floaty" already, so shouldn't need much help to plane... would be great if you could borrow some different sizes to experiment..maybe a 28 pointer or smaller? Some of the pro's run down to a 26 pointer with 6m..

Another problem might be lack of mastfoot pressure .. when planing, check if your shoulders are further away from the board than you bum, and that your arms are straight...

Suggest you check out this website for a fin size calculator.

http://www.boards.co.uk/kit/finsize/index.asp

In my experience, it's pretty accurate.

Adding to Laurie's comments, your own weight is also very important in the equation. I weight just over 105kgs, and my smallest fin is a 29, and I can't use it unless the wind is over 25 knts. I usually use a 34/36, and only ever experienced walking once using a 50cm slalom race fin !

Also the area of the fin, the shape, and thickness, all determine how much lift it generates. From my experience ignore the fin "size" printed on it and physically compare the replacement with what you are using now. If you are getting constant walking, suggest you go substantially smaller (26 ish ?) as a fin only 2 cms smaller may not solve your problem. Good Luck.
