Hi folks
Am I allowed to have G10 fins and a harness in my carry-on baggage? I'm just a couple of kilos over the weight limit

TAS ,i don't think your allowed steel items ,so if you take your bar off it should be ok

Definitely not the fins, harness will be ok with the hook off and into your checked in luggage. Get some other stuff into your carry on to get the weight down, but coming out of Cairns with windsurf gear, Qantas have weighed my carryon as well as the checked in bags.

It's interesting that the same gear that weighed 1-2 kilos below the limit somehow gained 3-4 kilos after a few months of sitting in a shed. I suspect the gear bag has absorbed moisture.
I have three fins - 32, 36 and a weedfin. If I leave one of them behind it might work, if I leave two, that will definitely work, but I am not sure which ones to leave. I'm going to Green Island. Never been there before, so not sure whether the 36 is useable there, or whether I need a weedfin at all. Any advice would be much appreciated

Yes 36 is fine in the right area at the right tide level, there are reef heads where you could hit it but the event management will advise the best sailing area and times for tides each day. Id take all 3 fins, you may need the 32 for the strong wind days. I've never had to use a weed fin there, but I think there can be ribbon weed in the sailing area at times, (one of the local crew who've sailed there recently might advise otherwise?)
My gear at checkin has always been a kg or two more than I calculated, it could be better prebooking an extra bag and spread your stuff across another bag. Keep each one within the 23 kgs. Before flying back home it's worth trying to get your board and sail bags, sails and footstraps dry if you can

Thanks. Guess, I'm going to have to book another bag

This is USA perspective, but I've never had problems taking fins, mast extensions and harness bars in my carry on. But put one screwdriver in your carry on and your out of luck.

Something to consider... wet bags are heavy bags...(on the way home)
we often get some decent drops of rain at night or different times throughout the event , there normally isn't any weatherproof cover in the rigging area ....luck has it most years the last day is always warm and sunny so you get to dry gear out.... but I'm thinking that luck surely has to run out?! A weatherproof cover/ground sheet may be a good investment.

Best to contact them directly. I also heard that it was fine.

On Australian domestic flight what you can and can't take on flights seems to be arbitrary and change from airport to airport.
Not long ago I travelled between Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane for a photo shoot only with carry on. In Adelaide they made me check in a tripod "because it could be used as a weapon". Anyone other airport didn't seem to have a problem with it.

I once travelled with all my scuba weights in carryon. Great to avoid the excess charges but stupid with the long walk in the terminal to the plane. Also thought the overhead bin was going to break.

Before you check in just walk up to the security scanning and ask them directly. I did this once when bringing a large coffee grinder on a flight from Melbourne to Sydney, had no issue.

On my way to Green Island, I once took a selection of slalom pointer fins in to where they scan your carry-on luggage in and showed them to the security staff there and asked whether they could go through and was told absolutely not. I deliberately hadn't checked my main bags in at that point, as I just wanted to see if my fins could go in the carry-on luggage, so went back and packed them in my main bags. Things may differ depending on who's on security, but best to check rather than be caught not being able to take them with you.
