Hi,
I'll be in Sydney soon but only for a couple of hours. Will arrive there mid-day and have to be in Gosford in the evening. Will have another couple of hours when returning.
Any suggestions about what to see in such limited time. Thought about opera house/harbour bridge etc. but would like to know which spot is best to start from (e.g. where to leave the car etc.) Just don't want to waste too much time on wandering around aimlessly.

Appreciate much your input.

Where are you from, other parts of Oz or overseas? Been there before? How long are you in Gosford for? Will you go walkabout from there?

2 hours is rather pointless, but let's try. If you're driving through Sydney, then perhaps a drop-off at South Head and the walk around there to Camp cove for the sights. Great walk and view of the middle harbour and north head from there.

Else as you said, the Opera, from there a walk from Circular Quay to the Bridge will chew up your full 2 hours. At least you get a view of the most beautiful harbour in the world. I also bring people to under the bridge, south end, from Circular Quay. Surprisingly quiet there and great view of the ferry traffic from there. Also like the walk from there to the Observatory, if you walk fast. But great loop if you can pack it in.

Or you could take a quick in-out ferry ride around the harbour - Watson's bay or Manly. Nice ride if you don't know the joint.

At night: I like the walk through the Gardens, to Woolloomoolo, up to Kings Cross. Nice old turn-of-the-century townhouses there.

If you cross the bridge to go to/from Gosford, you can also just drop at McMahons' point and walk around and under the northend of the Bridge, with a full view of the House and city from there. Gorgous walk.

DON'T: Manly, Bondi, just walking around the Rocks (Japanese only, waste of time). Don't venture downtown, waste of time too, little to see there on a business day. Don't go in those stupid restaurant so-called cafe, self-proclaimed European near the Ferries. Absolute expensive touristy crap and snotty service. Don't cross the entire bridge - gets boring past one-half.

He's right, but there are also bad ** to be seen there. Almost a "don't", IMHO.

If you've only got 2hrs, yep. But where do you park? The Domain?

Are you flying up and picking up a hire car at the airport? If so you are best to do your touring by car from the airport up to Gosford and back.

I'd try and do a figure eight route, from the airport drive to La Perouse then Maroubra and up the coast through Bondi etc up to South Head. Stopping wherever you like. Parking will be the big problem though. Then drive through the eastern suburbs, Double Bay, Edgecliffe etc to drive over the Harbour Bridge via the Cahill Expressway. Drive up the Pacific Highway to Gosford.

On your return trip take the F3 freeway back to Hornsby then turn onto the Pacific Highway. Drive down to Gordon, turn left onto the Mona Vale Road. Drive down to Mona Vale. Perhaps turn left to check out Palm Beach and Pittwater. Then drive down through Narrabeen to Manly. Then drive through Balmoral and Neutral Bay and then through the tunnel. Drive through the Eastern Distributor back to the airport. Stop wherever you like along the way.

This way you don't have to pay the Eastern Distributor toll.

If you aren't picking up and dropping off a car at the airport please disregard everything I wrote.

I was in Sydney for a few days a month ago,to anyone that drives there an automatic transmission would be an advantage.
Never relised how steep some of the roads are especially if you have to stop for the lights, got my hand brake release working pretty well but what a pain.
GPS is useless around the city area.

Best quick cheap quick tour - Walk the city down to the Quay.

Get a return Ferry ride to Manly - here you'll get to see pretty much the best the Harbour has to offer (in the short time you have) - Whilst in Manly walk the corso (short walk less than 1k) to the surf beach.

If you're lucky the swell will be kicking in through the heads and it'll be real roller coaster ride as you pass the heads opening.

Or you could find one of those free internet terminals in the airport and surf Seabreeze for 2 hours.

Groovy.
