Hey fellow Windsurfers,

Do you guys know the easiest way to fix a plastic board after it has gone for a windsurf for it's self off the top of a car on to the ground. The board went for about 10 meters along the asphalt at the car park at Goolwa and if I can't do a DIY job where are good places to take it.

Cheers Pittsy.

Hi Pittsy,

What sort of board is it?
What sort of damage has occurred?
Generally you can do small repairs by cutting out the split and glassing onto the foam using epoxy and tucking the glass under the plastic around the edges. Then you fill and sand.
There are a couple of guys who sail boggy lake that do a good job at fixing boards but at a cost.
I can email you their ph numbers if you are interested.

Cheers,
Chris

Sounds like a good excuse to buy another board, turn it into a coffee table and go shopping.....

Hi guys.

It was actually my dad. As i headed out into the water i told him to strap it down or take it off and he forgot. It's a Tiga 285 LWR (about 10 to 15 years old). Great board though.

Anyway, the damage is a hole about 1cm in diameter right on the rail about half way down the board (that isn't what worries me). The part that i'm worried about is that when board was hit right on the tail, fine cracks are now leading down to the fin box. Plastic has lifted up a bit to. There is also a small split of the plastic down the side.

I would like another board but i also love this one. My brother aswell who actually owns it. Sat nicely in the water and was really fast because it's a racing board.

Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

cheers

some people have used hot glue guns

but it can be plastic welded...find a bumper repairer ...they might help...but it is best to use the same plastic obviously as the welding rod...in theory anyone could do it with a small flame or similar but practise is needed on scrap to attempt this...the welding is not that difficult if you are used to basic welding.[gas not electric]
but the foam underneath is the worry to much heat and bang no foam.

find a plastic welder and see if they will attempt a wels with the foam underneath....but let that risk be on your head not the welders.
good luck...or try a hot glue gun for a possible fix it method...the hotter the gun id say the better as you really want the plastic on the board to slightly mely to bond properly with the glue...its cheap and may notwork but is this board worth spending too much money on.

Board wouldn't be worth much at all on the market but i don't know how much it's worth to me. Couple guys suggested areldite (not sure of spalling) and yeah others said to find a plastic welder.

I'll try fixing it but i think how ever it goes it'l never be the same. So i'll also keep my eye out for another board.

Araldite or epoxy resin's probably ok to fix the small ding, (rough the plastic up well first). Resin doesn't stick super well to the old plastic so if there's any load on the join it'll probably fail.
Plastic welding going to be stronger, but the foam underneath may well suffer!!
