Hiya All! I am looking to make the move to get some wave gear and hit the ocean.

My question is whether those that venture to the ocean and waves ever head back to flatwater sailing?

I will need to trade in/sell my 104L board, 6.5 & 7.7m sails 460 mast booms etc for the transition. Will I miss this gear when they are gone or is wavesailing the point of no return????

Any experiences from wavesailors will be a great help as I don't want to miss the gear I enjoy using so much now in the future.

(Great forum site! Keep up the good work Laurie!!)

Wavesailing is not point of no return, because conditions won't always be favourable, if you can afford hang on, or buy so you can wavesail in a variety of conditions, 2 wave boards, with a quiver to match. Defenitely takes the sport to another level though

I believe that in perth you need atleast two boards, A light wind slalom/freeride board for the flat water and a high wind wave board.

Then you have your bigger sails for the big board and 2 smaller sails for your small board. This way your quiver is still simple enough while covering a good range of conditions.

This way you can pick and choose where you go sailing depending on your mood and the conditions at hand.

kecks, mate valentines day I commited and became a one board man. 78lts only saturday afternoon I was planning in 12-15 with a 5.7 The new boards are ultra efficient mate, I know a couple of guys like this now, 1 board and 4 sails The waves aren't exactly fantastic in Perth compared to some of the not too distant country spots but this current set up gets me out locally and still rips well on a good break.

Welcome to the waves.....

Retroboy,

Good to hear that you have committed to monogamy with your boards. ME ... well hell, I still have 3 to knock up. My sexy JP wave gets the most action, of course when the wind is right, but then with her hot lines and smooth moves on the waves she gets me wet (when she bucks me off for making a bad move on her {I like frisky lasses}). Naturally my other boards do get jealous BUT I just tell them that when the time is right they too will get a ride.

Ha ha anyway getting back to the topic. I do have 3 boards still. 1 wave, 1 semi formula board + a slalom. Once I got into the waves I tried to stay there but with honesty ... as said before there will be days when the wind is not favourable (direction or strength) and you will need that flatwater gear again. Sailing is sailing, flatwater or waves, they're all fun .

Cheers,
Glen

I am more a one wave board 3 sails kind of man....
But I reckons that it really depends on your budget ..
if not limited then keep your big stuff , you could always sell them later.

But I suppose that if you ask, you probably want to swap,
so I would say go for it, you not gone miss them....not much... you just have to be ready to accept that you might sail a bit less but the adrenaline 's gone go thru the roof , so you'll be able to handle a bit better ( just a bit ) to sail less.

Progressing on the waves is unlimited and not really gear dependent.
Get a nice easy waveboard at least 2 wavesails...and come and join us in the 3 dimension windsurf.
now you never gone be only sailing on the boring horizontal flat water....you are gone go down slopes....up big lips!!!!....AND FLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

WELCOME
you 're gone love it!!!

Cheers for your time and very valued input Guys!!!

Think I'll keep the gear and look into a newish board and a coupla smaller sails (Glen, I think it may be because she is a JP that I am having trouble breaking the relationship...)

I like the idea of minimalist sailing that Retro is onto and hope to head in that direction.

Thanks again!
Seaton.

Spot on leski.....the stoke goes through the roof when sailing waves.

Two seasons ago I had it all 182lt Thommen formula/ 8.0m Rx1 down to 73lt wave with 4.0m Zone. Now with the One board and 4 sails I honestly can say I don't sail THAT much less. The bigger stuff probably got me out a few extra weekends a season which was dead flat and not a lot of fun - but hey I was still on the water.

If it's dodgy wind but I wanna get wet, hey, I rig the 5.7 and practice heli tacks, sailing backwinded and all that funky kind of stuff that smashes you when you get it all wrong it up in 25kts

Well i guess I am a board slut.
My skinny little F2 thomman at 49cm wide is always a lively wide.
Where as my jp wave 65 i really enjoy when the waves a good.
I love my jp super X 82, as my all round board.
Then my formula board is more the boring but the functional board for light wind.

i am a board slut, i admit that I have issues!!!
