I was reading this interview of Kevin Pritchard in the digital mag and it seems like the dude would rather race in formula than slalom, calling the last "boring"!! Man whenever there's a show on tv in which I know there's gonna be some windsurf I won't miss it! But if bloody formula comes up it's like pfff.... disappointment!
Slalom is faster and more fun to watch! If the conditions are there they should just do it! In the end of the year there's more exiting racing pictures and I rekon it's better for the sport's image than some huge gear barely planning on glassy water.
What's the general opinion?

Yeap, from a spectators point of view, slalom is much more exciting, but Pritchard was probably talking as an athlete, coz formula is much more unpredictable, tactical and technical. Getting through 100 racers at the starting line, anticipating wind shifts, and keeping an eye on the marks and your opponents at the same time.
The only Formula race that looked good on TV was in 2002 in Rhodes where they had a downwind slalom reach at the end of the race, just in front of the beach. You should have seen Albeau jybing his 9.8 in 25 knots and 1,5 waves as if it was his superX gear!

I would like to know how slalom's demise came about in the first place?
I get the idea that pwa racing which gave way to formula was different to slalom.
and never actually having seen a slalom race other than picturesI am in need of some edification in this area.

please enlighten me.

Two problems as far as the pwa are concerned... wind/time constraints, racing changes to a single format and less gear required as you only have one style of racing (formula could easily race in traditional slalom conditions). Pressure also came from the wave camp as soon as the wind got up since it was worth more points wise, is more exciting to watch/promote and had dedicated wave only sailors attending events. Speed events also would have had similar impact.

KP was comparing slalom to supercross where for sure it is boring, in fact slalom IS pretty boring to race due to all the reasons he listed it dosent change much from amateur to pro... get to the mark first don't screw up and you've won. As Rick23 pointed out there is so much potential for positions to change in formula. The most fun i've had racing slalom was figure 8 in waves, it just added a little extra to the racing. Yeah formula boring to watch but do you listen to the racers or the spectators.

Greenleader....Northboy's still using a fleuro orange seat harness and still looks just as eighties today as it did when it was new! Must be the advanced dye colouring Dakine used back in them dayz

As far as the mullet' (prenounced moolay - Oxford Dictionary) I could probably grow the back bit. Could I please be exempt from growing the top bit?

Thank you

Hey guys

I am new to all this and continually get confused by all the different types of windsurfing. Could you old hands please explain what the actual difference is.

From what I can see from the mags, both styles use largish gear and race around a marked course.

Combs, basically they are:

Formula; Upwind/Downwind courses, high windward mark similar to yacht racing courses. 3 sails 1 board (i think) sails generally 9.8-12m.

Slalom; across the wind/downwind courses. Normally figure 8 or S type courses. Traditionally sail size was no greater than 7.5m, when I first started racing slalom 10 years ago no one really used bigger than a 6.8m (in qld). There was a 9m and 80cm board width limit imposed in qld in recent years.

SuperX; Slalom with fun bits. This isnt on windsurfing qld's agenda but definately should be.

Olympic class; Pretty much formula on a one design clunker.

Raceboard (Long board); Not popular in Aus anymore, yacht style courses.

Thats pretty much it for racing formats, sometimes limits are imposed on the amount of equipment used eg. 42 (4 sails, 2 boards to be registered for the event). Should probably mention speed as well which is downwind (very broad) 100 or 500m timed course.

Hey Tony L
Enlighten/edification...why don't you come over to Lancelin Jan 8 and South Beach Jan 21,22 and maybe for some long distance slalom Leeman Nov 26,27 and Lancelin Jan 7 (dates for SBeach and Leeman subject to change).

I would say slalom would probably be boring if your in front all the time. The speed and competition can be quite a rush mid fleet. The racing can also bring out some hidden emotions and ignite confrontations on the beach (better than any aussie tv soap) just ask Ant Baker.
