Hi all,

Have been out of windsurfing for 6 years now but have the itch again. Am backpacking around South America until mid December and want to tool up when I get back. I think I have sorted sail out but now need to narrow down a board.

My Weigh : 72kg
Conditions : Melbourne city seabreezes and fronts mainly
Wind range : 17 to 35 knots.
Sails : 4.5, 5.3 ,6.0

Volume : 85-95 Liters
Style : Freeride, Bump and Jump, Light wave use
Budget : Around $500 so I figure boards from 2001,2002,2003

When I stopped in 99 the JP and Naish boards looked great.

Any personal favourites and experiences with specific models greatly appreciated (good or bad). Please let me know Make, Model, Spec, etc

Thanks
Derek

Sorry you have had no replies........ thought there would be a great many opinions on this topic due to the fact you want a crossover board... the one topic that causes so many arguments. I think you need to decide what you want: you have covered 3 categories there, maybe aiming for 2 is more realistic. That is a Freeride/ B&J or a B&J / wave. I'm assuming by light wave use you mean riding waves a bit as well as jumping. Any freeride / B&J board will be a pig on even a small wave due to lack of rocker... may be fun to jump but that is all.
Basically if you want 90% blasting and jumps off chop, something fast-ish with a good carving ability like a Starboard Carve, RRD AvantRide would suit you. If you want a board to crash and burn in big chop and ride waves OK too, but are not too worried about drag racing friends, any of the "Freestyle Wave" genre.. particularly RRD FSW, JP FSW (delicate from 2000 - 2002 though) and if you want cheap I can highly recommend the Sonic Freeride or RodeoStyle of 2003-4. They are basically a free ride and freestyle respectively made by a waveboard shaper so a lot more suited to waves than most crossover boards (you could call them a freeride/style fu&ked up, but that is what makes them so good if you get my drift... they are more turny)

Anyway for your price range though I'd consider a 2002 ish Mistral WaveScore (think the smaller of the two models was the 88L?) Anyway, first of the widestyle freestyle waves, not slow but not freerde really. Jumped insane due to width and an early planer. Ride waves well. However at your weight you'll need a second fin for the strong days. They are not full on waveboard strong though, some delam'd so look out for bumps on the underside.

i never had one, but the most popular board for melbourne bay was the starboard carve 99. A lot of the guys down there swear by them, plus they are so popular you can nearly always pick one up second hand from the shops...

If you sail a lot; most of your time will be in 15 - 20 knt days so you might want to get a powerfull 6 or a bigger sail as well.

If theres one board of this kind I really appreciated it was an AHD MAXXride, the 2001 model. This is supposed to be a full on freestyle board but a good wave board as well (turns well), and awesome for cruising around. It planes early, absorbs all the chop and because it's so compact you can jump on just about everything!
If you're 72 kg get one thats a bit less than 100L (wide & compact= early planning!).
Good luck in your quest!

2002 ish Mistral WaveScore
RRD AvantRide
Sonic Freeride or RodeoStyle of 2003-4

Thanks for the suggestions guys, the Starboard Carve got 2 mentions so that is a start. Will probably be Freeriding and B&J most of the time so if I have to compromise it will be in favour of that style.

keep the suggestions comming, seabreeses are only a couple of months away!!

Cheers
Derek
