Probably like most of you, every time I walk past a newsagent I have a look at the rack to see if a) there are any windsurfing mags there; b) if any of the magazines cost less than $10; c) if any are different from the ones I have purchased over the last 12 months.

Was pleasantly surprised and bemused to see that NZ now have a windsurf/kite magazine out now which is in a very similar format to the old Australian Freesail magazine. Even more interestingly it cost less than $6. Unfortunatley didnt have cash on me at time!!
Will go back Monday...

How is it that a country with a lot smaller population and one that is a lot less climatically geared up to support such sports has their own dedicated magazines and we still dont?? At least this is a little closer to home and the prices of gear will be similarly.

Oh! I just want to comment. Look, a shiny thing. Should be windy tomorrow. At last. A south east forecast and a bit of nice swell.

Freesail didn't go belly up as per se. They didn't do another issue due to the lack of interest by advertisers.

As for Wind & Kite, it is distributed for free in NZ and through some windsurf stores here in OZ or you can of course just buy it through your local news agent.

The main problem with Wind & Kite in the past has been that they do not pay for articles or any photography contributed. A lot of the articles submitted are in return for advertising. Frankly I'd rather pay $15,- for a mag and have decent photos/ articles and independent test reports rather than reading bias contributions.

Not sure what the strategy of the new owners of Wind & Kite is.

I think deepfried.tv and continentseven.de are great online mags but neigther of them are turning a profit.

There is a new OZ based online mag but time will tell how that fares.

The bottom line is, to run a good mag with interesting stories, unbias tests and great photography costs money...
