Does anyone know about this

On the Starboard forum site, they talk about carrying GPS with them when sailing which measures board speed, and distance travlled. I s that something people are doing in WA? Is it a special GPS, or do they all do it?

yep hardman,

any GPS will calculate your speed.
It just calculate your exact position every so often (every second let say) so then over a period of time it could calculate your speed.
A good little hand one will do that perfectly.

(s**t this week looks good but I am stuck ..need to do some work..)

How about going to Cervantes early next season for the WSP speed trials. Reg puts on a great show and it's free to enter and you will most probably get a prize! The large display on the beach allows you to push hard to get the last km/h out of your gear.
See you there

Chris and Dan use gps for speed verification. Etrex or gekko for basic stuff (max velocity) cost around $220 in Oz. I think Dan did 38Kts on wednesday and Chris 37.? Good for a reality check.

There is a guy in Midland/Belvue called Nick Heidal who sells the basic Etrex for $218 (which includes gst). Seems to be the best price locally (Oz). They are much cheaper in the USA however by the time the sellers add US$40-60 (A$50-75)for FedEx or UPS shipping, plus Oz customs yesterday told me FedEx add another A$50 for custom clearance this end as well as the duty and GST,there really is no price advantage for a lot of hassle.
I'm looking to get one soon myself, just haven't settled on which model yet. You can visit the guys web page here www.octapc.com
Just one other thing, Garmin seems most reliable. I noted the Cobra unit on this guys page LOOKS a bargin (features/price)but checking the web, seems most buyers of this model/brand have had bad experiences. see here: shopping.com/
Although, as the guy is local (Perth), warranty issues would not be a problem. He also said he had replaced one cobra unit.

The only thing with using a GPS is to remember that glitches sometimes do occur! Maximum speed is calculated every 3 to 5 seconds on an Etrex. So out of 100 readings at 20 knots you might get one that says 23 knots, so your maximum speed on your Etrex for that run will show 23 knots.
The thing to do when you get home is download the track file from your GPS to your PC and then have a look at the speeds and knock out any spurious readings to get your true max speed. To do this you will need a data cable to connect your GPS to your PC and a program that will talk to your GPS. I use Oziexplorer from www.oziexplorer.com the demo (free) version is fine for this purpose.
I have serious doubts about the waterproof-ness of my Etrex! If you are going to douse it regulary with sea water I would suggest getting a water (impact?!) proof bag for it as well.
Have fun.

As Cam said...nothing is perfect. I believe with the Geko 101 apparently no data can be up/downloaded to the unit, since there is no data jack and the etrex basic doesn't come with a data cable tho' they can be made (see here www.eftel.com/home.cms )or bought..usually at a price which is quite high for what you get.

The (non-genuine) cable (GPS 3VDB9E) is $59 from www.gpsoz.com.au This cable comes with car ciggarette lighter plug as well so you don't have to keep chucking batteries in the unit.
