The foretrex 101 is also a cheaper option. Same features as 201 except for batteries. The 201 is a sealed unit with rechargable batteries, the 101 uses 2 aaa. I would definitely get an aquapac, 90% of my mates units and mine have failed from water damage in both 201 & 101's. Having said this Foretrex have a good warranty, faulty units are replaced quickly.

Certainly the 201 seems to be the one.

Airborne Kitesurfing 4/11 Howe Street, Osborne Park 9244 4474 also sells the AquaPac for GPS, cameras, video, keys and phones.

To me, your GPS choice depends on what data you want.

If you are only interested in a spot/average speed then almost any water resistant/proof device will do.

If you want tracking data for use with GPS Action Replay www.gpsactionreplay.com (et al) then you need a GPS with at least 10000 track points. 10000 track points at 1 per second is about 2 hours 40 mins of tracking data or you can go for 1 track point per 2 seconds and double the duration but obviously halve the resolution.

It does not appear that the Velocitek has track points.

Julien, Julien, Julien,

That's not how our capitolistic society is ment to work.

you buy all your gps' kaos' and Koncept's from me at full retail price plus frieght and handling and packaging and stamp licking and consultation fees.

Then RAL Innovations can afford to sponsor me.

note how we spell "sponsor" in Australia.

Any way, you want one of those new F2's with the gps in the deck.

Oh and by the way, one day when you finally pass that 99 mark, then it's time to reset the units from metres per hour, to Knots/hr.

Try this place

shop.gpsoz.com.au/

for the Gamin Geko 201 or Fortrex 201. Both have 10,000 track points and download to PC capability. Cheap cables too if you need them. Fast efficient service same day despatch in my experience. I checked all over and these guys were the best.

Go for the aquapac "mini walki" waterproof case to be safe. Try rapid services for this item;

www.rapserv.com.au

Cheers

The other unit now available is the Navman Sports, water and impact resistant, aparently. Quite compact, like a large watch. The problem with this unit is that you can't download the data as you can with the Garmin. So if you want to submit your data to the Speedsurfing Assoc for world ranking, you need the download capability. Moreover lets you do some neat stuff like replay you routes/speeds etc on a PC overlayed on a image of your sailing location. Great no wind entertainment.

It seems there are a growing number of Sandy point regulars joining the roaring forties club.

I'm starting to think that GPS' are like sailboards, you start out getting whatever is cheap and available then when those numbers start to roll out, your hooked.
then it's roll on the latest and greatest.

I just need some lessons in how to get my track log onto this computer. The moment I ask, I just find out how computer illiterate I am.

Man, I've just worked out double clicks.

Silvec01- I've got the foretrex 101 and havent had a problem with it. I will get the aquapac to fit it when released though. I picked the 101 over the 201 for several reasons mostly to do with the batteries. When the 201's battery dies it is back to garmin for replacement. You have to keep it charged, with the 101 you just keep a spare set of batteries. Price.

On batteries if you get a 101 use quality batteries, if you use cheapies and water does get in the battery will leak in no time and you can kiss your gps goodbye.

Garmin are supposed to be releasing a new smaller foretrex in the new year if you can wait that long, I dont find the current one too intrusive and the timer is great for racing starts.

beware- if you want the ability to down load to pc then you need a suitable cable. i chose the foretrex 201 over the 101 because it came complete with a cable and the 101 didn't, you had to buy it separately which from memory was either the same cost or more than the 201. the other advantage as far as im concerned is the 201 has a built in battery (sealed unit) which minimises the chances of water ingress by not having a battery door.

Ive got a gps that can tell you your speed to the thousandth of a knot but Ive just got to work out how to get the 8kg antenna supplied with 24 volts before i can go on speed trials.
spos I'll have to shove it on another ship in the mean time.

I was lucky enough to sail the F2 missile while I was down at sandy point as well as the Exocet Warp Speed both very fast boards.
I did get the faster speed on the Warp Speed though.
I use the Foretrex 101 and have had no probs and like the idea of having a spare set of batteries.
If you forget to charge The 201 your stuffed.
I do wear it on my upper arm seems to get less impact there if you crash.

The cable for the 101 costs $20 or so, try to get it thrown in for the deal. 2 sets of energiser rechargables $20. The price difference isnt much but it is still a carton of beer. If you dont run the 201 flat the battery will quickly develop a memory, in running it flat you might not get a full session in or forget to charge it if you leave it go flat overnight.

If you get a gps which can connect to a PC you can save all your data
