G'day guys

I also sail International Moths, those strange narrow dinghies that are sprouting hydrofoils. On the English web site there is a story about their attempts at GPS speeds and how the units are not giving acurate results when two different units are compared, on the same boat recording the same run. Has anyone on a board tried taking two different units out and comparing the runs? It's not a calabration problem as on one run unit 1 was higher while on the next run unit 2 read faster. check it out at http://moth.iontergration.com/ and look for the item from 26/6/06 titled Vavavague.

Hi Jethrow, This doesn't surprise me.
The units them selves may read the max speeds differently. Looking at my data The Garmin Foretrex max speed is read at 5 sec but the Velocitek might read at a different interval eg. 2 sec.
Max speeds can very allot, that's why gps-speedsurfing only takes the best 5-10sec runs.

G'day Jethro,

The guys at www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx have been looking at this quite extensively and that is why they have standardised on only a few GPS's.

They also have standardised on the software used to analise the data to also limit irregularities from coming out.

A few of the sailors have also done quite some research by taking out two different types of GPS at the same time to compare data. This information can be picked up in the forums (sorry I couldn't find the thread for you)

Setup of the units to take identical readings ie 2 sec as a aginst 1 sec can affect data as well.

Positioning of the units is also important so as they have a relatively clear acces to sky.

If they set up and analyse the data as described at GPS speed then the results should be reasonably consistant.

For more information Slowboats the man as he lives and breathes this stuff.
