Hi Nathan,

Gearies is near Avalon which is in Falcon in Mandurah.

If you're travelling from the North heading south, before you get to the Dawesville cut turn right. I usually take the turning Mercedes Avenue.

As far as I know Gearies and Avalon work on a South Westerly winter swell.

It was working on saturday with quite big waves. A bit gusty though.

I thought it was gerry's

Coz the guy that first surfed it was called gerry?

"Oh that's gerry's break, yeh let's go surf with gerry!, he's such a cool bloke, why don't we call this break 'Gerry's'"

I think the ee or ea came from smoking too much hooch, and it became distorted over time?

The Correct spelling and pronounciation is

GERRY'S

Hardie's almost right, just afew details wrong!!

A long time ago in the dim depths of time, an old surfer named Ray Geary had a shack on top of the sandhill overlooking the break, which at that time was known as "Geary's shack". Since then the "shack" has been left off, and spelling of Geary's confused.

'Buckets' is the inshore reef that's just downwind of the Gearies surfbreak.
A strong rip will suck your gear straight into it after a wipe-out.
It eats up masts and puts sails thru the shredder.

Polesurfers are advised to avoid this hazardous sailing spot.

Handy Tip by 'slave.

G'Day Slave,
Hope to see you soon!
But you can talk about buckets!!!
I remember you pulling the most amazing trick there I've ever seen!!! Trying to go right (upwind)under a mountain of white water right in front of it. When you realised it wouldn't work, at the last minute, jumped off board, somehow turned it upside down, and floated right over the top of bare rock in flat mode, board, rig and you all in one plane, perfectly horizontal!
Didn't even get caught in the back wash, just picked up rig and strolled up the beach as if you'd planned the whole thing in advance!!!

And by the way, in this context, Your should be spelt you're, short for "you are"! "Your" means something I own, not something I am!!!

Hi Decrep,
Welcome back to Oz.

And speaking about survival tactics;
The best party trick I've seen was Pat in the middle of the Bay at Gracetown on a winters day, mast high surf.
The wind had shutdown momentarily and he was about to cop a huge wave on the head.

He climbed up on his gear and pushed down hard on the boom and mast with all his strength and submerged the lot underwater. A bit like duck-diving a surfboard but this is the windsurf version.

The huge foamball passed over him and he returned to the surface in the waterstart position. As if on cue, a gust kicks in and he sails away.

Masterful.
