Suprise suprise, another prime wavesailing spot is being threatened by another corporation who will happily destroy the surrounding area in the name of making a quick buck.

Basically there are 2 things that threaten this area
1. Expansion to the sandmine owned by Cleary Brothers construction, located along the western side of Crooked River Rd, that stretches from Gerroa to Shoalhaven Heads.
2. Proposed resort, containing a golf course and a sh!tload of units/villas adjoining the same stretch of land.

If you know Gerroa, you'll know its worth writing in. If you don't know Gerroa (put simply, it is wavesailing perfection), then you might want to get angry anyway at yet another bunch of arseh0les trying to ruin another top spot.

For details of exactly what we're dealing with, go to the NSWWA site at: www.nswwavesailing.org

Also check out http://www.kiama.net/geps for the full story.

There are details and links on the home page. Well worth a read.

Either join, or at least write in on behalf of the NSW Wavesailing Association. Power in numbers as always.

Details are on the site, but these are the people to get stuck into:

Frank Sartor Minister for Planning: [email protected]

Michael Young DOP Mining and Extractive Industries: [email protected]

David Kitto Director Major Projects Assessments: [email protected]

Do what the DLSavings proponents on SBreeze did and draft up a letter and we can each copy/paste it and put our name on it. I don't know the spot but I'll help in the campaign.

Hey qwerty, please don't take this the wrong way, as really I am on your side. I'm just trying to get a gist of your argument here. What is your opposal to? I do know Gerroa and know that it is at its best in a Nor Easter and alternatively a Southerly, both wind directions of which, from what I can tell, will in no way be affected by the development should it go ahead. Is your beef more with the fact of spoiling the fairly pristine surrounds of the area or is the impact it will have on the surrounds such as increased traffic etc etc.
As I said, not a criticism, I'm just trying to understand you opposition.
Cheers mate :)

Sick_em,

as far as i can tell it's not just the environmental impact (which would be quite large with polluted waterways etc from the sand removal). A key part to the argument is the fact that more houses equal more people which equal more cars and more beach users. This will result in no car spaces for windsurfers to park and the lifeguard flags/swimmers taking more and more space and potentially resulting in pushing windsurfers further south and i guess into worse spots for NE's.

Yep, correct Crash,

And Sickem, you are also correct. It is likely that the wind will not be affected where we currently sail.
However, as you also stated, the issue is the monstrosity they are willing to dump into this area, and the potential to stuff the surrounds, and possible negative effects on us. And keep in mind that anything they do will be irreversable.

Opposition to these proposals will come from all corners down there. This isn't just a windsurfing issue (as mentioned by Crashlanding). Without sounding too much like a hippy, the forest areas they are ripping down are pretty unique in terms of plant and animal life (crikey what was that!). As well as some sacred aboriginal sites. I've only learnt a lot of this recently. Personally it gives me the sh!ts when companies think they can just come in destroy all of that. As the NSW sailors love Gerroa, they are doing their bit to say no f**king way.

And who's to say what affect it might have on us down the track?
Safety in the water will become much more of an issue. Its sketchy now, and would only take some rich golfing knob on his holiday down there to cause problems. Who knows how far that would go?
Its the number 1 spot on the coast. Gotta make some serious noise about it.

And also, if they approve crap like this, who know what other little additions they might get approved in the future?

Cool qwerty, like I said, I'm with you. I love Gerroa and have sailed it many times myself. Friends live on Headland drive so I jump at any chance I'm asked to come stay cause i know more than likely I'll get a sail at some stage. I really just wanted to hear what your objections were, which are quite founded and valid, rather than just an ill-imformed knee jerk reaction. I will back whatever oppositions you have to the plans. (even though I am a golfer and I'd love another links course of the quality I'm sure it would be ;) )

Everyone, there is only 2 days left to email your opposition to the sand mine and development in Gerroa.

Even if you are in a different state you should appreciate what it would be like if your local spot was ruined - eg Windang. I have sent the following, very basic email to the following people:

Frank Sartor Minister for Planning: [email protected]

Michael Young DOP Mining and Extractive Industries: [email protected]

David Kitto Director Major Projects Assessments: [email protected]

It goes something like this:

I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed Gerroa Sand Mine.

My views are based on the proposed mine being in an Area of High Conservation Value which contains biologically important forests (I also believe that sand quarrying is not permitted within conservation areas under Kiama Council’s Local Environment Plan) that will be cleared due to this development. There is also a good chance that contamination of the Blue Angle Creek and Crooked River could occur which in turn would affect the endangered Swamp Sclerophyll forest.

The proposed Sand mine will threaten two significant Aboriginal archaeological sites that are presently identified for protection. This sand mine is not needed as there is ample sand available from Dunmore quarry and it will only spoil the scenic beauty and any future developments will affect the use of 7 mile beach.

Please accept this email as my opposition to the development.

I don't know if it i'll do, but surely it's better than nothing! Feel free to copy, paste, slightly edit and then send it on!!

Cheers.

I've got mine away. lets hope it helps.

Quick note, that email address for Frank Sator needs the ".gov.au" on the end.

I'd encourage everyone to send an email. Even if all you write in it is "Reject the Gerroa sandmine proposal" then send it.

Only takes a few seconds and it all counts.
