Hi,
I've recently decided to get back into windsurfing after a 3 & 1/2 year break since I moved to Australia and had to sell all my gear , however I have no idea where to start equipment wise as I've been out of touch for so long. When I left the UK I had the following gear:
Bic Techno 283
F2 Phoenix
Gun 7.2 Slalom Sail
F2 5.7 Free ride Sail
At the time I was just starting to grow out of the Bic, I could carve gybe 50% of the time and waterstart occasionally, I was competent at chop hopping and generally enjoyed just blasting inland or down the south coast of the UK. The Phoenix I used for lighter winds or to get the GF out occasionally. As far as the sails I used the Gun 90% of the time as I never seemed to get wind to use the smaller sail.
I'm 30 and about 5'11" and weigh about 75Kg's (on a good day). I'm really looking for some suggestions as to some recent boards & sails, that you think may suit.
As far as a board is concerned I'm looking for something smaller than the Bic, but still uphaulable (if needed), that'll get me going reasonably early, but still can be blasted around and chop hopped etc...
Sails, I'm really unsure, I want something stable but reasonably maneuverable, I suppose I'd be looking for suggestions in the 7-8m size and 5-6m.
As far as budget, it's not huge & i'll be looking at 2nd hand gear where possible, at a guess i'd be looking at about $2500, however less is better but could be more if necessary.
Happy to do a lot of the research myself, it's really starting points I'm looking for. So any and all suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks in advance for your help, you'll probably see me around here a lot more in the future.
Cheers,
Adam

Dear Adam,
I am the local ballet instructor, and can offer you some packages that involve both windsurfing and ballet lessons.
You need to think about what sort of windsurfing you want to do?
There's lot's of flat water blasting around Perth, The swan river, safety bay, lancellin, then you have ocean sailing, which is all of the coast, and you also have wavesailing, and not to forget the racing which includes Formula.
So what is it you want to do?
There's plenty of good 2nd hand gear on the market, both privately and in shops.

Hi there,
I'm actually based in Sydney and have a fair idea of where to go.
At the moment I just want to be doing some general freeriding and blasting on flat(ish) water here, i'm really looking for gear that will allow me to get back into it, start to perfect my gybing (hopefully) & waterstarting.
While I was in the UK, I used to love going out for a blast for a K or 2 on my Techno, chophopping on the way out, gybing (or falling off) then blasting on my way back in. If i hadn't moved over here I would probably have started thinking about a freestyle board and getting into that side of things.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Adam

The newer style wide freerides are probably what you are looking for then, Something like a Starboard Carve, or JP Freeride, there's obviously others.
Are you looking for one board to do everything, or will you be a 2 board person eg strong winds versus lighter winds.
One board policy then you'd go for something between 90 and 120 litres, depending on the trends in windstrengths and where you ride.
2 board policy, go for something like an allrounder waveboard for high winds, lot's to choose from somewhere in the seventy to 80 litre range, and lighter wind board go for something like a freeride in the 100 to 125/130 litre range.
Again JP's and Starboards are all good boards, but any one brand may have a brilliant board in a particular category. Others will hopefully contribute.

Thanks for the quick response, my current thinking is that I'll be a 2 board person however I'll start with one and see how I go. So like you suggest i'd be best looking for something in the 100-130L range. I'm thinking I should be looking at the higher end of that range so i have a board that'll get me out in the lighter stuff.
I'll have a look at the Starboard Carve & JP Freeride ranges and see what i come up with.

I am in the same situation as you were looking for similar gear in the Sydney area. Did you end up finding something?
