Is it possible to sail at Green Island?
According to the graphs it's always blowing 25+kts 24hrs/day.
Regards,
Harrow.
Whoops, Just checked out the web-site - don't like the look of all that coral reef!

green island is a really really good place to sail
as long as the tide is over 1m the reef is no worries. most of its sandy bottom anyway although there are some bombies in the deeper water.
when the tide is higher it is great jumping on both port and starboard tack as the waves will stand up over the bombies/edge of the reef.
then for those that like to go fast there is flat water all around.
and yes its hardly dropped below 20knots for a month or so now.

its about $50 per person to get the ferry over there with Great Adventures. used to be able to get a season pass but they only sell them to employees nowadays.
Not much to do there except sail and look at coral and fish. but there are better spots for looking at coral and fish. i guess if you havent done that sort of thing before then it would be good.
food there is expensive, its mainly to rip of the tourists.
lots of cheap accomodation in cairns. its tourisst season at the moment. depends on where u want to stay. if you want to know more drop me an email.

I used to work on Green Island a few years ago
The sailing is pretty awesome (as long as you are not chasing waves)
Bump and jump and flat water blasting over crystal clear water and coral reef
Only issues i ever expereinced was having to dodge Green Turtles at extremly high speed !
There are some great wave sailing spots off Cairns but you need a boat.
Got some seriously sick wave sailing off the edge of the barrier reef (around 60 km off shore)
Pretty sureal experience wave sailing where you cant see land... like I said you need a boat for that stuff
You used to be able to get all your sailing gear onto the Green Island ferry included in your standard trip price but dont know if this is still the case... FireyBob and a few of the other FNQ loclas will know if this is still the case !

yes you still chuck your gear on the Great adventures ferry.
As for going 60km off shore when its blowing 20 + dont think that would be too much fun in a small boat.
u can get waves at green when the tide is right although its pretty hit and miss.

if the waves peel and are logo high plus.. and cross errr break then the ride would be worth it.. just take a heap of food, booze, and first aid equipment and go out there and just stay out there for a couple of weeks. you only need like 15 knots if there are waves.

Before i worked at Green Island as the windsurf instructor/life guard I used to work on the dive boats as a dive master.
I used to take my sailing kit with me and when everyone had finished their dives and were kicking back de-gassing so they could dive that evening i would often rig off the back of the boat and jump in.
Had some great head to logo high stuff...
In response to heading out there in a little boat... NO WAY
I haven't lived in FNQ for more than 10 years so not sure about the availability of boats to do surf/sail trips
