Did some weighing last night of my gear for future reference. Was very surprised at difference in weight of fins and straps:

Board only, then Board, straps and fin:

Tabou 105 6.8kg & 8.3kg
JP FSW 84 6.3kg & 6.9kg

That's 1.4kg vs 0.6kg for straps and fin.

Ok, the FSW only had 3 straps vs 4, and a 25cm fin vs 32cm, but that doesn't make up for a difference of more than double. (And to think I was worried about a possible 50ml of water in my Tabou - I'd be better off chucking one of the rear straps! )

(Yes, the straps were all bone dry, and reproducible measurements were made on electonic scales.)

Harrow, what about finding out the difference in the weight of straps when wet, compared to dry. Should be a more meaningful comparison. You'd have to work out an appropriate "saturation" protocol. I think you could probably recover tht extra 50g by chosing straps which absorb less water, not that such a weight saving is likely to make a noticeable difference.

MikeyS, maybe we should all spray our straps with ScotchGuard (tm) to keep the weight down.

Does this say something about the different weight of straps from manufacturer to manufacturer ?

Maybe 'nudeman' is onto something after all.

Thats an unbelievable huge difference, I'd really like to know the difference when they are all wet. Do you have digital scales? Can you take em all off again and re do the experiment with them wet?

hey... if you are so worried about weight why don't you ditch the footstraps all together and spay the deck of your board with scotchguard.

And while you are at it poor some Aceton in the air valve of your board. It will dissolve the foam inside the board which should take another 2 kgs off.

... lastly I would probably sand back the deck pad and paint coat... another 0.5 - 1kg in weight loss...

... and of course you could get really extreme and cut the nose of your board. It's only excess balast anyway.

No Harrow, I don't care that much about the wet weight, even though that's what really counts, except when carrying dry gear to the water. And it doesn't matter how light a wet board and rig is, after a good exhausting session, it still feels like it weighs a ton!

More ideas for weight reduction: Drill holes in the mast...cut your toenails extra short...take laxatives the night before ...shave your b****...take out your nipple rings...

Harrow, could you weigh them wet, preferably shortly after dunking...the difference may be even greater and it is a closer approximation to the real world and is a valuable guide to float if you have to slog back when the wind has dropped.
re the fin.. the weight is based on volumne and density. Glass fins are heavy ~ 50% more than carbon. Lenght is not the issue but as the fin gets bigger it increases weight by the power of 3, ie 32/25 = 1.28 eg 28% longer but it also 28% thicker and wider so it ends up 1.28 x 1.28 x 1.28 = 2.1 times heavier.)
As you have the digital scales how about telling us how much you Tabou weighs when fully wet?
Guys pay a fortune to get the special light versions when more than one layup is offered... maybe they should just get lightweight straps.
