Hey all, new here
I caught the bug late last year and i'm incurable

Been reading the forum for a while, so decided to join up. Actually, once i read OceanBlue64's comment in 'advice for a virgin' post i had to join:

"The only down side (if you can call it that) is that once you get going and find out how enjoyable the sport is, you will bore all your non-windsurfing friends with all the details of your last sail, you will spend hours looking at the wind charts hoping to see green arrows and you will forever be looking at new gear and wondering how long it will take you to save for it. "

It summed my last few months up.

Have sailed boats previously, but needed a single person/less rigging option, and to mix surfing with sailing (as i'm a dodgy standup). So naturally windsurfing was the choice (kitesurfing seems to far away from actual sailing and i wasn't keen to follow the trendy people).

Been on the water since late Nov last year (~40 sessions), into the harness, straps and waterstarts-when-windy-enough stage.

Currently sailing on ~90's gear custom ~120L board with old NP, Sailworks race cammed sails (5.5, 6.5, 7.5) on a river round the corner from the sea. Last time i took the 6.5 out, the breeze picked up and after a very enjoyable ride, i came in with a 6.0

So if you come across a nice (prob latest 6yrs) 100L freeride and a 6.5 freeride sail for a reasonable price, i'd be happy to know, as looking to upgrade for next Summer

So there's my rant, i'll annoy you on other threads later, Dism

Welcome to the windsurfing madness

I am sure 'the bug' as you put it also creates a little insanity. I have just been out all afternoon in reasonable winds, had a few PB's to put on the GPS Team Challenge site, feel like my arms want to drop off, can hardly walk..... but....... I will take my gear to work tomorrow in case the wind picks up in the afternoon and do it all again Bring on the pain!!!

You're lucky then OceanBlue

I'm stuck inland for awhile, so i've been sussing out lake sailing
Gotta do something when you away from the coast

I know that feeling of dead arms, after trying to sail more then 4 days straight (5+ hrs), before i got into the harness (the insanity that you mentioned)

You may feel stuffed from the PB's, but at least you aren;t stuck inland atm!

Hi and welcome DISM, glad you're not from SA, otherwise you'd be SA DISM.
Sorry, you'll find some bad humour here.

Hey, know how you feel, just started this great sport and as i work away underground, any day at home is now spent watching the wind and weather to sail on the pond.

When on coast sail at Bellinger River near Coffs
When inland (Armidale) thinking of Dumaresq or Malpas Dams

Thanks for the warning Easty, from what i've already seen so far, i totally agree, but hey i signed up didn't i!

Malpas is probably better than dumaresq, don't expect to get planing on dumaresq because the wind will be as gusty as heck (lots of mountains around it).

That said I've seen windsurfers on both dams. Get the stoke any way you can

I grew up in Walcha which is South of Armidale and we used to windsurf on a private dam on a property called 'Yalgoo'.

Take the time to drive to South West Rocks. Its well worth it!!!!

Ah, I had heard mention of a few Armidale based windsurfers, this supports that rumour

Yeah, South West Rocks is the next trek when i'm on the coast

Till then (when i get my boards out here) i'll have a bash at the dams

Any windsurfers on here based around Armidale/Coffs areas? There's a couple down Urunga (just sth of Coffs) way
