I finally went and brought myself a better wetsuit. My trusty West is good for windsurfing, but the non-sealed seams and the simple neck and arm seals just let the water circulate too much when I surf.

So I followed all the advise and got myself the best I could afford, being an O'Neill Psycho 2. What a beuty. It keeps me nice and warm and is so flexible I have to keep checking that I haven't forgotten something.

The only trouble is I can't get in and out of it. What with all its double sealed openings and Zen zip sealing systems it is a very interesting proposition.

The plastic bags over the hands and feet works well, but I find them a bit of an incumberance on the board (yes I am joking).

Realistically, it is reasonably easy to get into. I will just have to get something to hook the little Zen zip seal flap on the back, because there is no way in hell I can reach it. The biggest issue is getting out of it after 3-hours on the water. Being totally exhausted doesn't help.

If anyone comes across a middle aged bloke half out of a wetsuit in a carpark, can you please poke me with a stick or something to revive me

Just got a West's Fluid edge.

Bloody things harder for getting in and out of than my zip free Rip curl that I've just replaced.

On the upside I surfed for 2+ hours today down at south piont in a cold onshore and was nice and toasty.

Well happy

Hi,

Bit of a tip from my spearfishing days, we used open cell wetsuits which are really really warm, but they don't have any cloth inside them, the rubber directly touches your skin. For comparison, a 3mm open cell is about as warm as a 5mm 'normal' wetsuit.

Pretty much the only way to get into them is to have a bottle with a bit of shower gel in it duluted into lots of water, you tip a bit of that mixture into the wettie and bingo it's lubricated up for ease of getting in and out of. And if you fill it up with hot water before you leave home then the wettie is nice and toasty warm even before you get into it!

One of life's guilty little pleasures

Open cell means that the neoprene is sliced open on the inside surface, which means that the neoprene cells are cut as well (hence the 'open'). That's as far as my knowledge goes, what it means in practice is that the inside of the wettie looks and feels like rubber, unlike a normal wettie with cloth both inside and out. They're also very very warm.

It grips like a b@stard if you don't use shower gel mixture, almost impossible to get into.

I'm guessing you guys dont live in brisbane cause after buying an oneill heat yesterday and seeing all the psycho's in the rack it got me wondering- who the hell in qld buys a $500+ wetsuit (apart from people with more money than they know what to do with).

Thanks to Liz B. for putting up with my procrastinating; I dont want a black one have you got any other colours, trying on of 50 wetsuits, being half naked and tripping over (not a pretty site), extracting me from wetsuits i thought i was stuck in for life, trying on the same 50 wetsuits, questions of why is the whiz bang 2006 better than the 2005, deciding upon one of the first wetsuits she suggested and finally- er this one here does it come in black?

For a popular surfing nation we really have limited wetsuit choice, on top of what we have an old uk mag lists- spartan, gul, armstrong, oxbow, marlin, one, sola, pro limits (might be available over here), g-line and circle one. Alot are UK companies but some should be available over here- spartan spartan spartan.

And no not even liz can draw me to the dark side
