I had a curious first time experience this arvo at Peli Point:

Planing at speed on flat water, I put pressure on back foot and the WHOLE BOARD rose from the water and kept sailing as if on a cushion of air. Only a part of the fin was in the water and it was strangely easy to keep this effect going and controlled if I stayed on a reach. If I worked up wind, there was no control, the back just wanted to slide out (cathetation effect as mentioned in a previous post).

The question is: Is this hovering effect desirable? Does a deeper fin diminish or amplify the effect? Has anyone else felt this 'lift off'???

this has happened to me previously.

the first was using a deep fin on a moderate width slalom board on a prototype board before wide boards existed.

the second was speed sailing. when going absolutely flat out on the edge on a 60lt board if you look down you can see only the fin in the water.

Think it's caused by fin flex, introduces some vertical lift into the equation. So a stiffer fin might not do it as much, but this is just a theory. Not sure how desirable it is, did you enjoy it????

i think i agree with the fin flex on the deep fin. it was a 70cm fin that did flex out. felt weird....but when no one else was able to plane i wasn't complaining. theory was to take a mid 90's slalom board and stick a massive fin and sail on it to get going in light winds. i'm guessing that if the fin was stiffer i wouldn't have been able to stop it railing up.

on the speed gear it only used to do it when i was at max speed. so i just thought it par for the course. sailing on the edge.....?

It was only a short fin I was using.

Did I enjoy it? It felt weird more than good. The most noticable thing was the absence of the splashing noise of water on the board and the smoothness of the ride from floating above the chop. I assume I was going faster too because of the reduced friction.

If speed is aim, why not pursue 'the hover' effect?

well they have wacked a hydrofoil on instead of a fin, haven't heard any claims of extra speed.

fins are designed thicker at top and thinner at bottom to produce vertical lift (hence pumping of fin to get planing at times) Bernoullis (sp) theorom. Remember the old days of fixed centre boards and getting caught in big wwinds, you would always get dumped through this lift happening and bringing the whole board outof the water, then it would trip on the edge, big wipeouts.

This was done about ten years ago. I remember someone making a 'hydrofoil' fin. There was an article with photos about it in 'Freesail'. The guy could ride continously with the board almost a foot out of the water. Looked pretty freaky. Would be great at Sydney airport to deal with the chop though.

There was an article in one of the boards about rush hydrofoil windsurfers. It said that they are no quicker than a fast waveboard. And even a fast wave board isnt very fast compared to a slalom board...
