Was about to kill myself after 4 months with no sailing... well it blew a bit, when I was at work but well below an average winter so far.

Then today happened...... 27-35kn, cross off, screaming down the line wavesailing ....... only knee to waist hi waves but all that means is you don't care how hard to hit 'em or how hard u crash.

Gotta love the south coast

Knocked of work early, got a board to test drive

Picked up every light on the way home from Welshpool to sth Mandurah changing to orange.

Got home just after 4 picked up my smallest sail (4.5m) and headed out to Avalon Bay, rigged up,

Squall comes through wait till it dies down marginaly and I can lugg my gear down to the beach.

Quick prayer to Huey to be gentle and to play nice and away we go

Oh smeg

We're a bit powered up here, at end of the bay the breeze has picked up, low and behold I managed a Gybe(hey thats good for me)

The run back the winds going off, it's chopping up inside the reef line, half way back I've cavitate the fin.. hey were going sideways at 30+kmh, oh well. 100+mtrs later got it back

Oh smeg, the winds getting stronger. Time to unhook. made it back to shore Yippeeeee.

Park my sorry (not so little) freckle on my gear in the miny pond waiting for the worst to go past

10 mins later my imagination tells me it's time to try it again.
Take of well powered up, a ramp rears up in front of me at the inside reef, aim into the wind a bit, hit it, we have air Oh smeg again! we're flying backwards.

hmmm might be time to flag it.

43 knot gusts on bom for Mandurah central, no bruises, no damageCooool

A good session (albeit a very short one)

Yeh...i was going to go, thought better take the dog for a walk first.

Went to attadale foreshore, it was blowing its balls off. My dog could hardly walk straight. I'd throw the ball ino the wind it would travel at the most 10 metres. Threw it the other way and it went for fkn miles.

So i decided on staying home and drinking warm tea instead.

Heh I used the 70 rule....

(70 - 40kn)/10 = 3.0

But I don't have a 3m sail.

(that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it)!

I'd reckon it was one of the windiest days on record for Perth - consistently reaching 40 knots for most of the day

Overpowered most of the time on my 4 metre! A great experience!

Going home for a cup of tea would have been a great idea.

Haven't sailed in ages had a great time on the new S-Type 104 and 5.5 Overdrive, briliant combo.

But it did end with four fractured ribs, not happy...

Thanks to the guys that helped pack me up.

Ian.

What's the 70 rule? Where does the 70 come from? How did you come up with the number 70?

ask Northboy, I have no idea, but it's an interesting concept.

My other rule to pick a sail size is the rule of 70. 70 less wind speed in knots = sail size in m2. Eg. 70 less 25(knots)= 4.5m sail. Or 70 less 20 (knots) = 5.0 sail. Works for me.
My 4.2 is good from 28 knots up.
