How high do I need to jump before trying to forward loop, and am I going to break stuff?

I can see no sensible reason to wait until I can gybe before I give it a go, huh?

1 to 2 foot is all that you need to jump... the only thing you're likely to break/dent is your pride

launch full speed and maxed out into a 10ft ramp ......wait ....wait.....wait....stall it just one second more.....NOW.

it is likely you will break something, but it will look cool and you'll be the hero of the day

I can't go forwards..the thought of doing them makes me go green[xx], best to stick to comrade kremlins advice..

Advice I've read is that you should go for a speed loop first (low and fast) then go for a big one later. I really baulk at the idea of deliberately crashing at high speed though. It seems to me that getting a good boost off a 1.2m wave at a moderate pace is going to be more conducive to going for it.

Any comments from the cognoscenti?

Hey Harrow,

How high are you jumping at the moment?

Anything higher than one foot for me ends up in my feet coming out of the straps and then panic stations while I'm in the air

Probably only one to two feet max, but I saw a guy looping the other day on Botany Bay and he seemed to be jumping only about 6 inches high - I have no idea how he was getting the loop in.

Not max speed... just above planning is enough

boat wakes that you can hit square on while going slightly down wind are great for learning them on the wave only needs to be a foot high if that

the head of your sail will probably cop a flogging while doing your first 20-30 attempts at flat water ones, as it will clip the water as you go round. I destroyed the top 2 panels of my older sails while doing my first couple of dozen as they were plain mono panels that were getting crispy. I still clip the water if i point high into wind when launching but i got newer sails now which are all x-ply and are still stretchy enough to take the punnishment.

feels like you conquered the world when you do your first full spin, board and all keep persevering!

You don't have to be high at all, you only need the board to be fully released from the water. Also when learning loops start way off the breeze, I mean way off. The more cross wind you go when you loop the more vertical the rotation so do them very off the wind which gives a much flatter rotation (called a spin loop sometimes).

The hardest part of looping on flatwater I found was getting the timing right. When I first started I always used to sheet in too early (the board wasn't properly released), this means the board stays put and you and your sail go over the front. I never really broke anything learning though, only a top batten. It has the potential to wreak havoc on the front of your board if you half commit to the move, just sheet in hard and never let go of the boom :)

I broke my eardrum... but no gear. Its easier if you got a smaller sail and some waves... Make sure you jam your feet in the straps as hard as you can. I first learnt fairly flat water, with just wind swell, but with a wave its way way easier (as long as it aint too big)... whatever you do dont let go, and be prepared for a real sore arse/back/chest
