Hey guys, you'z helped me in the past with equipment things, so here I am again.

I have this brand new old-design Windsurfer sail from Inginuity in Sydney (nice product, BTW). The sail is almost like the old ones, me use it for 10-15 knots freestyle and teaching.

Anyways, how do I fold this thing? Here is the problem: it seems to be made of the old Dacron-Mylar combo (perhaps the names have changed...). There are white-grey lines in the material, about half-inch apart. The lines are mostly vertical, except for the bottom part where they are horizontal.

Q1 is: what is that material?

Q2: how do I fold it? Anything I tried creates corners and folds, and like the old days, seems to damage in that area. It's too long to roll like my mono sails, plus the place where lines are against the roll don't seem to take it well.

I can't roll it around the mast because the considerable luff doesn't roll around, but creases all over length-wise.

Any ideas ?
Thanks guys.

PS: yes I could ask elsewhere, but am asking here.

I thinking if you are in the USA, and the sail came from Australia, it didn't get there rolled out flat or rigged up. How was it packed?

I have so many other questions also but we'll see how the thread continues

Yes you're right: it was packed/rolled from Sydney.

It was neatly folded then rolled, but as when I do it meself, it had 'corners' where the material is already delaminating. It's all micro, but say I take it out 15 times a year, and given damaging usage (freestyle with me falling into it, etc.), won't last more than 2 years.

Mind you, old ones didn't last in the old days either. Perhaps I should just pick up a spare in Sydney over Xmas...

We roll our best sails around full-length plastic tubes, which keeps them very fresh. The other way is to fold the luff over so the folded sail is as wide as the top batten, then roll or fold the sail.

There's no way of avoiding the crinkling in these sails unless you do the full length roll, but that applies to any sail of course. If you roll them full length and don't let them flap too often when sitting on the beach, they'll last forever. My best sail was second-hand when I got it and it's done three nationals and a few other races since then and it's still top notch.

There are issues with delamination in the last batch to come out; many are being replaced under warranty but the replacement has been delayed as the sailmaker and fabric maker fight the issue out.

You're coming to Sydney? Hope you can hang around for the Nats, 23-26 January. We can find you a board.

you fold them kinda in half verticaly, should end up about the length of the top batten, then roll from the head cap down like a conventional sail, i think from memory the the monofilm backed cloth is only on the leach and not the foward panels so you don't end up with any folds in the monofilm..

Just roll it like any other sail. How hard can it be?

Thanks for tips Chris. What diameter tube? Yeah, I'd like to give it a go.

Wow, a sail lasting so long, am dreaming of it. Plus I already broke 2 masts and 2 sets of booms with this sail just this summer. Ouf...

Worry not, I thought of it. However it's gonna be my usual December thing here. Rels and friends usually leave little time, but dying to go Wanda, might look to borrow some gear and drop by Dubroyd or Balmoral.

Thanks all.

OK, it's in motion for P. Stephens.
I'll talk to my boss for an extended leave (they have sponsored me for a couple of comps this year, should be OK). It's a 75% now.

I'll communicate with you via PM for the rest.

Board-wise: I wouldn't borrow - I'm a breaker of boards. I think I have old bits & pieces in a shed somewhere, or we'll do a sale/resale thing.

Yourself and Dennis look like 1-2ers, I'll fight for 3rd with the other talent skill-wise !
