Hardies being rather reserved here me thinks

He's been wandering around with woody all week hanging to get it wet.

I hope the stains wash out when he eventually christens it.

First sail

8 foot 2 inches (249cm) long, 70.5 cm wide, bout 120-5 litres.

Early planing excellent, tracking excellent, rocker line perfect, nose never comes into play, very fast, very stable in non-planing conditions, jumping easy and great fun.. Gybing technical, this is where the width becomes a disadvantage, so wavesailing will also be very technical. Lot's of practice and set up arrangements to be tinkered with.

Thanx Decrepit, you know your stuff and your'e a very good man

Looks like a lemon, sails like a dream

How do you post photo's decrepit has photo's but neither of us know how to post them, "oldie technophobes"

Thanks Kaos, glad you like it!!!
It's the first board Hardie's designed but it's far from the first board I've made, although it is the most technical, (all that carbon, peel ply etc).
It was a great learning curve for Hardie and myself, I'm now game to tackle a few more vacuum finishes. And Hardie's thinking hard about his next wave board!
So thanks everybody for all your help!
I really enjoyed testing it out on Sunday at the top end of it's range, cann't wait to try it in lighter winds with a bigger sail.

YEAH BABY that's a big MOMMA !
Good idea with those holes for an offset strap, whats the tail width 1' from the tail? and the most important question....where did you get those jump pads from??????
What size and style of fin and fin box?
Now we will all know who owns that board out on the h20,[}:)] you'd better be polite on the forums from now on

G'Day bluejuice, Haven't got the exact tail measurment, but from the template it looks about 18" (big momma is quite apt!)
Yes the pads are nice aren't they? I bought 2 sets from Stoney last year in Gero, trouble is we had to use both the back sets to get the required coverage.
Tuttle box and Hardie has a pile of fins, mostly slalom, I think my next project may be to modify one of them to more of a wave/freestyle shape.
He had a classic weed fin on Sunday, it was a tad big for my 75 kg, but fine for hardie's 95 kg

It's my first go at building a board, but in reality I was lucky to do more than about 5% of the board, the rest 95% was the skill and experience of Decrep.

I am a total butcher when it comes to hands on things (26 years desk and office bound), Decrep recognised this early, and banned me from touching the board after I sanded threw a rail line.

To give you another example of what a butcher I am, I put the first crack in the board before taking it out of the garage for it's first sail. I had four fins in my hands, and turned abruptly, the weed fin flew out of my grasp and into the board with it's sharpest edge cracking through the carbon layer......., phuck did I kick the schit out of myself for that one..Lord of the Imbeciles, a total phuckwit

So no credit to me for the board.

It's beautiful to sail though, it feels sweet, and that's in conditions it wasn't built for

Jump Pads from Stone Surf, he had them made by Katana I think.

Fin Box Tuttle, Using a weedy at moment bec of strong winds, will use a range of Tuttle fins I have, to see what works well with what sails. The 1' of the back width haven't measured yet?

Polite on the forums MWA!! The problems on these forums as with emails, it's so hard to work out what someone is really like or on about. Everyone projects their own stuff when reading emails and forum posts. Some people have got a very wrong impression about me from these forums, ce la vit. The true me you only get to know in person, if you end up proving trustworthy.

Hardman,

Any chance you would like to post a more detailed description about all you have learned regarding design, your construction method and where you sourced your materials from? I don't know much about rocker and vee which I have seen a few posts on. What did you decide on and how did you get there?

I know I am keen and no doubt many others are to know all your experiences.

Your board looks great and by the sound of it, performs just as well.

Cheers

Slow learner,
Hardie's started a thread (I'm sure from notes he was taking while we built his board), about building the board

If you check the thread he started before we built the board (board building supplies), you'll see there are heaps of responses re suppliers.
Hardie had a rushed trip to Perth so didn't have time to check them out properly. He got all the material we needed from Summit Chemicals and Stuart Bell

Rocker and V have to be tailored to the purpose of the board.
The requirements of this board was early planning in the ocean, so it's got reasonable rocker up front, but not a lot at the back. No v at the front, starts about middle of board builds to a max around the fin, about 5mm.

Big Smile,

Board alive and kicking,

materials cost about $1500.00,

But probably had about $500-700 worth stuff left over!

Took it out today with a 6.9m Wave Sail in about 10-15 kts and shredded 3 m walls for miles, was only one out...........

Build your own board guys, or buy the Starboard Aero........

Was getting 50-100m rides one after the other with no-one out, obviously would prefer it stay that way, but.........

Was fully planing, about 80-90% of the time, only scary bit was getting out thru break where I was grovelling, lucky didn't get smashed by some of the monster sets, I just stalled when big sets were coming through, waited for the lull, pumped out thru zone then fully on plane all way out, fully planing all way in....So it is possible!!!!!

Sailed my secret spot at WhiteHills, need 4WD to get there, long way from the turn off, might be better accessed from Preston Beach...... won't give any more details than that....

The offshore spot is a long way off, only breaks 3m+, 1 to 2 km, it's pretty scary won't ever do it again on my own, need boat support, but boats are hard to get out when it's 3m+ and windy...

Forget it really unless your mentally challenged such as my self..

There are safer spots than the offshore one

I hate it when people call us "sick homo's", I'm just very very happy, you could even call me a sort of very gay chappy?

Anyway, I think it is time for a new project to change this world of ours, I have just read "Cloud Atlas" and am concerned about it's predictions for the future. I think we have the power to change the direction of the world, and when and if I have the time, which is limited due to my empire building, and recent purchase of a small fishing boat, "Into fishing?", I will think of some wild project, but if you beat me to the punch I will gladly follow your lead. Although "warning" I have so much work on, head is pretty full with stress, so may not be the wittiest I've ever been.

dear dear dear hardie,

I am saddend to hear that the australian government is demanding so much of your time. i imagine the Bali 9, that QLD chick, Afganistan, Food shortages in Korea, your new job as super porn stud and greenrooms obsession with commodores is a lot to deal with, and though your mind is sharp, your wit, witty, and your finger large, i imagine even you are struggling.....

Maybe a days fishing is exactly what is ordered. I wold love to join you on your new luxury liner, at a suitable time, where we can catch fish, chat about our exploits with beautiful international models, and drink bourbon..,.....(pm me and we can sort it out)

Oh how our love doth bloom, hold me close to thine hairy bosom of yours so i can cleanse my teeth with those rough furry bits.......

I have read your response and have a warm growing sensation within me,

However, the last financial deal I did, didn't go so well, so that fishing trip will not be in the luxury liner (ala the greg norman boat on TV) as planned but in a well used 4.4m Stacer Runabout, ........ you make one wrong investment and the banks never forgive you.........

Anyway, The esky will be full of our favourite beverages and my Chinese love from Chogging will accompany us with one of her friends from the modelling agency they work for (Got tired of my American girlfiend from Atlanta, or was it she dumped me?), so we won't get bored if the fish don't co-operate, I have organised for them to provide us with lessons in Cantonese, until the fish come on the bite of course....

Must go catch soon!
