Have just moved my 07 Exocet Warp Slalom 58 and found a dinner-plate sized depression on the bottom near the tail.....appears that on the weekend, while in a board-bag in my hatch-back, the sun through the glass has superheated the bag (now signs of heatshrink) and made the foamcore of the board melt and shrink. Thought a boardbag would protect against heat etc. The board is @#^^*#!
Has anyone else had this problem? Am devistated!

wow, how unlicky is that? my tabou lived in my car constantly, without the vent plug, parked outside in the sun for almost 2 years except for when i was sailing it, and not a hint of delam or melting foam, and it was never in a board bag Maybe a manufacturing defect all along Mikey? Very sorry to hear it anyway

maybe boardbags + hot cars = bad

I agree with Haircut. I doubt the heat would be hot enough to melt styrofoam. Styrofoam is a pretty good insulator, so I doubt anything short of a heatgun would do it. At least not without adding some acetone...

I'd put my money on a fault from the factory too. If it's still under warranty, give it a try. The board lady seems to show a few of these faults, but on the deck rather than on the bottom: boardlady.com/petersjp.htm .

The only way you will really know what happened is when it gets opened up. Melted styrofoam has a particular look to it, and even then the divinycell should keep the shape.

Dale.

Styrofoam should be good to about 50deg, could have got a bit hotter than that, but it seems unlikely. I wrap my boards in black plastic and leave them in full sun for the final cure, under glass it could get a little hotter, but I'd also suggest the warranty route.

It can get hotter than 50deg in a car on a hot day , full sun . Especially if it,s a wagon or something with a lot of glass area .
If security is not an issue , like at work in the car park , I always leave a window or 2 down if my boards are in the car . Not alot of places you can do that though .

Are you guys for real. Ive seen the glass weave soften and start to show through in the exact shape of a black section of those flying objects board bags. I'v seen styrofoam melted under black footpads after the guy left it out in the sun on a 40 degree day to try and dry out a damaged area. I've seen all the foam in the last 4" of a nose melt from the sun shinning through the windscreen onto a red board.
The Salt water fever repair guy once told me that board bags cause heaps of damage, they heat up, they are sealed so the hot air inside the bag doesnt escape it just builds up, because the insulation properties of the bag trap the heat in the bag. It gets worse if you stick it in a car or tin shed, my wagon gets up to 65 degrees on a hot day and my shed up to 60 degrees. Stick an oven thermometer in your car on a warm day and see for yourselves how hot your car can get.
Mikey your lucky, no.... your smart that you had the vent undone otherwise you would have had a major bottom delamination.
Use a white board bag not that reflective silver either and dont zip it up. Park in the shade. Partially open your windows. Buy light coloured boards. Heat and sharp objects are your boards enemies. Use the vent plug.
Warranty I dont think so.

No, it was the heat through the car windows. Oh well. @#&% happens. Alesson to all. Have been advised to purchase a silver\reflective bag next time. Bag was a bit open, no shade was available....oh well.

That's a real shame about that board Mike. What a bummer.

AND raising the issue of board bag design......

The bags function is to protect the board from bumps, scratches and uv damage to pads n straps.

They aught to be properly ventilated.

There must be a way to achieve padding with ventilation - discontinuous padding with porous fabrics is the obvious answer, light coloured fabrics obviously.

And if they have discontinuous padding they could maybe be expandable/compressible.

And while they're at it they could put some little tie patches on them so you could tie little loops through them to hook over the ends of the roof racks to stop them blowing off when you're untying them or stacking them on windy days.

Now there's a great idea! I like it
How often is it windy when sailboards are put on or taken off roof racks?
Usually it's a 2 person job.

Mikey, check the vent plug.

Sometimes manafacturers FORGET to drill through to the foam...it's happened on a couple of my boards. If this is the case, maybe a warranty case.

Check by , put your board out in the sun to heat up for 5 - 10 minutes then pour a small amount of very soapy water around the ventpug, open vent plug.

No Bubbles = No hole

it's a good trick to see if your footstrap screwholes are sucking in h20 aswell.

Is the depression hard or soft ? if it's hard i wouldn't worry about it just think of it as a concave who knows the board might perform even better.

I,ve seen the board, the damge was caused by exteme heat, as often happens with something like this there is the tell tale sign of the fabric weave coming through the paint(most boatds i,ve seen that have poped the bottom of when valve is left sealed ) show the weave coming through. Mikey 100 is going to fill sand a glass . Somehting to keep him busy over the holidays

Bog and spray, I'd imagine the fin box looks raised?
When I leave gear in the car on hot days the windows are left down an inch, makes a huge difference to inside temp. I bake my boards between 65 to 80 deg. for 2 hours to cure them which the car does easily in summer. Once the 'd'cell shrank from 5 to 3mm under the tail when it got to 95 deg. ( to hot to touch ) for 2 hours when I realized I didn't drill out the vent.No delam but needed bogging around the fin boxes.
Heat up 'D'cell and it will shrink.

Vent plug was out- hole is drilled through- windows were down an inch- fin box not raised- bottom still rock-hard--- I think it was the angled rear window of my hatch acting as a magmifying glass on one specific area of the board and shrunk the styro.
