A couple of years ago whilst holidaying on maui I was informed by one of the sailboard shop owners that the average age of sailboarders on Maui was 47.

guess what I am now 47 and feeling very average.

does this mean that from now on I will be getting above average?
Does this mean my skill level will become above average?

Will I come up with a solution to why I can have sessions stacked full of full planning gybes in rough conditions, then the next time out crash at every turn in smooth water.

At what stage will mother nature respect My elder statesman tag, and give me the gust that gets everyone else onto the plane 20 ft from me.

Am I the only average sailboarder?

Just wait till you get to 60 then you'll be really average!!!!

Trying to remember back to 47, must have been that young once???
Ah yes, think that was when I almost drowned myself at Esperance, 2nd day there. First day all the crew were out at 4th beach, so I joined them and had a good time. 2nd day, nobody's out, looked about the same as day before, so I go out by myself, been out about 1/2 hour, getting some nice waves, when this huge set comes thru, get a big jump off the first wave but stack the landing, next wave is bigger and breaking further out.
Get the mast facing the wave and stand on it as per instructions, hang on for dear life, hoping to pull it out of the wave, like I can in Perth, but of course, it doesn't happen. When I run out of breath I let go, expecting to come to the surface, but I just keep getting rolled!!! By the time I come up I'm really gasping, and the board is a 100m away heading for the big rip along the coast. When I finally get to it, I just lay on top of it for 5 mins or so! sail it back to shore and call it quits for the day. Drove on around the coast and found everybody else out at observations having a great time, but I was stuffed!!

Not to worry thou, my skill levels were still increasing back then, (not sure they are now thou) So you've got about 13 years to kick the average tag!
By then you'll no longer worry about it, having young guys flying around you, throwing aerials so incredible, you can't even figure out what they've done!! Is just the natural way of things.

decrepit,
There is nothing like the feeling that comes from battling out to the back of Hookipa after nearly drowning in the white water while launching, getting washed backwards by the first wave you come to, near exhustion but totally proud that you made it.
Turn back to ride a swell( trying to stay out of the way) and a bikini clad 16yo or something 30kg girl sails past one handed giing you the Go Girl salute. Now I feel old.

ggf,

34 just the age for feeling young enough to mix it but feel like **** when a school girl refers to you as "that old guy over there".

what it should make you is RESPECTFUL.

So far we have ages 47, 60, 34, 18.

av = 39.75

before that 18yo upstart joined in it was 47.

anyone want to help the average back to average.

any conspiracy that makes me feel above average is ok by me but the maths is getting complicated.

anyway most of us real average sailers don't know jack about typing on computers so couldn't reply if they wanted to.
That's just to make me feel better.

Hang on, you can't throw me out like that!!!
Did I mention my good friend, an 80 year old lady windsurfer!!!
Not that she'd go out at Hokipa, but I'm sure she pushes the average back up towards my end of the scale.
Good to hear all you young guys thou, thought the sport was slowly dying out as we all got older.

I don't think any of you is average!

Average is the "Typical Aussie" sitting at home waiting for the AFL (or whatever) to come onto the TV with the only excersize or sport coming from getting of the growing backsides to get another Tinnie.

I think (now theres a laugh for you) that you should all be classed a water junkies as mostly you are looking for your next session out on (or in)the water. As you may notice when there is no wind or waves we all start to get twitchy with the DT's.

Now I've got to take my boys out sailing (10 and 11) There you go Rosie you old lady of the waves.

hey Rosie,
my daughter nikki, is twelve and loves sailboarding. She has tried kiteboarding but thinks sailboarding is more fun.

I was trying to keep her out of the equation but the more above average I feel the better I feel, I think.

Has anyone got a maths update yet?

best winds.

PS: my wife says I'm addicted, obsessed, crazy, etc.

Elmo,
posting 3 times does not effect the maths, good try.

Rosey,

the youngest in this forum to reply is a win.

maybe we can come up with a formula thats factors average sail size used and age minus age started by the length of your nose and the car you drive blah blah blah.

at any rate I'd better take more notice of the ages as I sit on the poles with the grey beard brigade at Pt Danger.

Tony

I've been calling you average for years!!!!! Had nothing to do with your Windsurfing, choice of spare tyre for Sandy Point Trailer, or who you prefer to hang out with.....

However....I do have to mention that i did get almost passed on the water by a six year old today with a 1.0m sail on a Bic Nova...SHE was flying!

Mind you...her father of 43 was right behind her on his Starboard and mum 41 was on the beach, on rescue duties.....

Guess my 4 month old will have to learn how to swim, before i can take her out on the Windsurfer.....not that i fall off!

Guess your lost with all the maths by now...anyone working on that average still?

Yippee!

Warren

Yippee I am not average,

I give up on the maths.

I so far above average it doesn't matter.
So all you beginners and newbies can start trying to catch up and become average too.

By the way, what does an above average sailboarder do next?
become morer abover averager, or just learn to spell.

double forwards here I come.

Donate my gear, in your dreams. 18yo dreams(messy)

don't you know that the more above average you get the more below average your gear becomes.

maybe that's what balances the equation out and makes us above average sailers look average. (read 'very average')

best winds.

I am 18, but I am a kiter, not a wind surfer...

kids ... kids... shock horror lol... jokes...

I certainly don't want to make anyone feel older, or to bring the average down... I am just replying to you 'RAL INN ' who questioned the average age...

Anyways...

Take care and good winds...

So elizabeth,
what's the ? to this 'used to be' average sailboarder who is also an IKO qualified kiting instructor.

It's great to see kiters venturing to this part of the forum, maybe we need a new section for us cross factioners.

Has anyone done the mathes yet?

Ral inn, you lost me on ur last comment... as a kiter you would probably be just above average (age that is) ... most of the guys that kite are in their 30's and some 19, and 20ish or so.... but mainly they are older than 30... however, I am always very appreciative of those more experienced kiters who can show me how to do something, or help me with launching and anyhting else... without you guys, I wouldn't feel safe kiting... you're always so helpful... and that means your skill level will be wayyy above average though... good on u...

Even though I am a kiter, I venture in when all the kiters have gone... comments arent as frequent lately... out of season

better winds 4u and me...
