I know this is a completely selfish act but...

I feel that I have so completely and utterly mastered the art of the catapult that I have every right to claim this "trick" as my own.
Therefore I am renaming the catapult to the GRUMPLE.

Take yesterday for instance, it seems that on at least every third run, if I manage to come out of a gybe I have incredible difficulty getting the board to come back up onto the plane, and just as I manage to get the board and sail angle right to give me the right board speed, I overcook it and whammo straight over the front.

The worst part is I know I am going, and I cant seem to get the harness line to fall out of the hook.

Then to top it off, as I was thinking "might go in and change down to a 5.0" I performed the ultimate trick the "GRUMPLE and DESTROY".
Was bearing off further downwind in order to get back to my lauch spot when again that feeling of "oh sh1t", "unhook, unhook .... aaarghh" fired over only to come up with one half of my boom still in my hands )#$%#) #)$*#)$* ... destoyed, one near new boom

ah well, back to grovelling to the wife coz I need more money

Well these dayz he tends to only do it when doing 50km/h+, or gybing occassionally, or jumping occassionally, or tacking regularly, or waveriding more and more rarely, but is totally under control in most other aspects of windsurfing. And I can talk as I was exactly the same not too long ago

Not so much "At Will" more Sub conciously, I have been known to regularly do forward loops(minus gear), can still execute a very stylish splatt gybe which tends to lead to more freindly jybes on the beach.

The best cataplts occur when speed sailing and using a GPS, I have recorded a catapult distance of 15-20m in the middle of the mandurah estuary (the joys of data logging GPS) which equates tyo about 1.2 seconds of airtime before impact and subsequent swim back.

You've got time to unhook if you know you're catapulting?

Respect man, RESPECT!

There's no way I can do that, my best is to scream SHEET OUT! inside my head, sometimes helps, usually doesn't.

btw I've never managed to unhook midway through a catapult and fly through the air, that seems like it would make it worthwhile! I usually end up hitting the mast (and cracking a rib), sail, or like last time tearing a ligament in my knee. Also followed by rueful inspection of the number of dents in the nose of my rapidly-aging board.

OK well I'm counterclaiming it as my own. I'm calling it the "****, not again".

It seems like there's nothing else for it but to organise the "Catapult Olympics", officials score the contestant's catapults on frequency, gracelessness and sincerity of swear words uttered during and after the trick. Bonus points are added for breakage of gear, bones, and lack of ability to sail away afterwards. Extra bonus points are added for degree of difficulty of returning with broken gear/body, or poor choice of location (like at the train if you catapult in front of that seaplane as it's landing).

Sure to be a good spectator sport!

Bloody Hardy talked me into Avy

Twas hard work but good fun with a few alright waves coming through.

I'm gonna see if i can get the Hardy fella to hit the Est today as the winds will be stronger which should be good for a fang.

Should give us a yell next time if you want to use GPS, tiz interesting (and addictive)

When I say I know, it usually just as my feet are leaving the board

and its not SHEET OUT, SHEET OUT, its more like SHT OW, SHT OW.

mmmm....catapult unhooking sometimes hurts alot more, for instance when its 30+ and you unhook only to geth thrown 20m and face first into the water, plus you have to swim back to get your gear!...stay hooked in no falls no balls
