Get lots of Physio! I had a bulging disc earlier this year, 8 weeks to be safe.

6 - 8 weeks.
Physio helps you feel better in the meantime but the time to recovery is the same.
You'll have plenty of time to recover before summer!

I wish her good luck with the surgery. I had surgery on my back in July to remove a bulged disc and am making a good recovery.

Was it the windsurfing that popped the disc?

if so, you may need some advice on technique.

What stage of learning are you at?

It was my 5th time in the water. The embarissing thing is....... I did it putting on my wetsuit at the back of the car! then still went out. Didn`t realise the amount of damage till that night at home.

I know how that can be. Last time I bulged a disc all I did was bend forward about 15 degrees to get something out of a drawer. You just feel a little pop and a bit of a pain at first.
The best advice I can give is take it easy for a while then work on building up your core muscle strength. When your core muscles are strong they support your spine and disc herniation is less likely.

Sorry to hear about your injury Jason. I totally agree with Windxstasy about muscle tone, particularly the core region between the hips and the bottom of the ribs - ie the lumbar spine where all the spine has to support it is muscle. The lower back and the knees are two key injury areas as a consequence of our evolution from four footed to two footed creatures.
I would highly recommend some yoga or pilates when you are well enough - but preferably one of the more meditative styles such as Hatha, Gita or Satyananda. These in my opinion are safer than Iyengar. I have practiced yoga for 25 years or so and I credit it with playing a big part in injury prevention as it tones the muscles and enhances flexibility. I crush fractured my lumbar spine at 18 crashing a motorbike but thanks to good general fitness and yoga I don't get back pain and am now 50 - touch wood!

Gory picture of 100% ruptured patella tendon - long story so won't bore you with the details, but it happened just as I was getting back into sailing after a 16 year break. Took another 3.5 years before the knee was up to sailing again. (hence the brace on left knee in my avatar).

PS - look away if squimish.

Was thas that an early form of key hole surgery I've got a Meniscus tear
in my right knee i have been putting up with it for 8 months now but have been doing alot of exercise routines to help and it's been working but in the end i'll need to get it fixed at some stage.

Choco,

Have an MRI to confirm the tear, or make sure it is not something more serious.

I went in for a minor tear repair, only for the surgeon to discover my ACL was in a bit of a mess as well. He did a clean up but recovery was a lot slower.

Yeh, but they used one of those 21st birthday keys everyone signs their name on.

PS - you can see the wire at top and bottom which was drilled through the tibia and the other drilled through the patella, then they just twisted wires together in typical bush fashion until the patella came back down from half way up my thigh. Ahh the memories.

Choco, get that menicus tear tidied up soon and you'll avoid a lot of arthritic change and a possible knee replacement in the future...
