The American Windsurf Mag for March 2007 said at the end of the PWA pro season The most winning brands were
Sails...North 70 Points
Neil Pryde 44 points
Maui sails 38 points

and Boards
Starboard 66
F2 33
Mistral 30

I'm surprised to see north up front and no Gasstra, aerotech, and with the boards where is JP, and exocet???

North, Pryde, F2 and Starboard have good and large teams. Gaastra had some good results, I guess there is women's results to consider also.

Aerotech don't pay the pwa fees afaik. Exocet dosen't have a big enough team of top riders to place, dosen't make them any lesser boards though. Exocet have their 2 year board policy which is something most brands should have done years ago.

That would be an interesting calculation to work out the average then it would most likely be a different result as you say

Heavily slanted in the direction of who has the better pro's on their team.one would guess
Old average Joe's such as me, take little notice of rankings like these. Manufactures get off seeing their products on top.(that's the idea, marketing marketing marketing)
Most of us realise that the Pro's have customised gear they use.

Does this indicate that they ( the brands ) will be more expensive again to what they already charge. Just imagine if JP was the top point soring team then how much for thier boards - that mean now a starboard board new would boost it to $3000 ???

more emphasis should be on the riders !!!!

i think it is right to say there are riders out there on crapp equipment that run circles around other riders with the latest equipment and no skills !!!
Now JP is not in the points does this mean the prices will drop

Starboard has been at the top of the points table for the last few years, their boards haven't increased in price as a result.

PWA now uses production gear rules, no custom anymore. However starboard, f2, pryde and North have more boards/sails in their lineup than most other brands, gives the riders better choice of gear to suit them.

MK dunno if that is the rules, I don't read the PWA rule book Buuuttttt I wonder if they do abide by it, as this season I have seen a few pro's use customs painted up to look like other boards. No I will not say who, where and what boards as I don't think that is fair.
Their way out in a comp of course is to say it is a proto for next year.

Anywya I also find the ranking interesting as when have you ever seen a pro wavesailor on North and Starboard? I can't think of one.
Most are Severne / Starboard and then a few on other sails....... and then there is the absence of JP's as others have said. Thus these rankings must be based on RACE results only not the whole year over 4 disciplines (or is it 5 now that slalom is trendy again??)

Hey Mark

isn't it a common thing of the past with all the big pwa sailors with custom boards painted up as a big brand !!! that was quite a common practise for BIC in the 90's and maybe F2 aswell.

All the sailors used customs yes, fanatic even had no in house design team for a while but chose the best shape from the customs.

Now it is moving to production, racing has been production gear for a few years and last year ISAF released a waveboard list which should see the PWA follow suit.

PWA has 5 disciplines; wave, slalom 42, supercross, freestyle & indoor. I don't know which are production or not, slalom definately. Starboard boasts about supercross , freestyle and wave wins also. PWA claim results are calculated from all disciplines.

Currently on the wave rankings half of the top 10 are either on North or Starboard.

Full constructors rankings are as follows:

1. Starboard 67
2. F2 33
3. Mistral 30
4. Fanatic 19
5. JP 17
6. Tabou 11.5
7. Quatro 6
8. Naish 3.5
9. Exocet 0

1. North 67
2. NeilPryde 44
3. MauiSails 38
4. Gaastra 18.5
5. Naish 10.5
6. Simmer 6
7. Severne 3

JP and Gaastra aren't too far outside the top, again they dont have as sizeable teams as the top 3 (mistral apart) and mauisails has quality sailors.

Locally you might see pro's on customs, time spent not in competition would be spent testing new gear.

Gaastra in particular with the split of the team has cut back on sponsored riders to invest in a new huge factory in china that will bring all production in house including eventually masts and booms and the clothing and backpack lines that they do under licence or gaastra sportswear. I think you'l find them back in the hunt next year building a stronger team.
