I know this is a totally stupid question, but I'm a totally stupid person.......... so I have the right to ask it!!

Anywayz, Wavesailing has always been the pinacle of windsurfing for me, but I have to admit, I've been getting such a buzz from Speedsailing, that I've actually chosen speedsailing ahead of wavesailing on most occassions lately In fact I know people are getting buzzed about friday with strong winds and waves predicted, but all I can think of is that I have an oppurtunity of breaking my speed record this friday........... I'm feeling all internally conflicted............... Yet the pull of speedsailing is greater for me at the moment........... What is happening to me

I agree Hardie, I spent 15 odd years sailing surf and lately have been bitten with the GPS bug. I think in my case though it's an age thing. Wipeouts tend to hurt a bit more once you're pushing 40yrs old and also gear breakages don't tend to happen as much when speed sailing. There's always the opportunity to do some bump and jump riding anyway to satisfy that fix should the conditions turn ballistic. But yeah, I'm with you. Anychance you get to crack 30 knots and feel like Fred Haywood is a good one in my opinion (Finian is just too damned fast to emulate)

I love Love both forms of windsurfing but as there are no waves where
I live so its mainly Speed/Slalom sailing for me.

NOTE to manufacturers: what ever happened to that promo vid thing? Now it is so cheap to produce they should go back to making those vid's each season (or every second). They could do them for about $20 each and sell bucket loads. Collaboration helps too. Starboard / Severne DVD, NP / JP spring to mind.

Mark, You obviously didn't get a copy of Fanatic's "Addicted to ride". It came out as a promo with their 2006 range, and has some great footage of Victor Fernandez, and the rest of the team riders.

YEAH, speed u get a buzz for a while but like the drug it soon wears off and gets u depressed.

Is it freestyle or wave? There not breaking waves, but their doing the same sort of moves as if they were. Bit of a mix?

Because of where I live, it's got to be speed, but I would love to try real waves. But then, the old dog new tricks could be a problem .

I know you are into speed hardie, same as elmo, how about posting some GPS results to give us wind deprived FNQ guys a target. I reckon Troppo (sorry mate), on wave gear at Green Island, will give you a real run for your money
Just be fun to know what you guys are doing. Only one GPS windsurfer (another old bastard) here, and he scored a 30 knott on his first day, is this any good ? I'm guessing a 35 on freeride gear on open water, would be a good target, or is this too easy or hard ?

mmm, heres my take, I was hooked on speed sailing, had some good gear, was going to get the best stuff I could for speed sailing, then 1 day, I ventured in the waves! Immediately I sold all my slalom based kit, and bought more wave oriented gear, NP Alpha sails, JP freestyle wave.

Now here lies the problem, I have gone back and done some drag racing on flat water but im done with it after about 30 minutes or so, that drug has worn off, its still fun, but once tasted never forgotten, where waves are continually varied.

I will still have a few flat water days here and there, but the ocean is for me.

I guess half my problem is my motocross/supercross background leads me to the more exciting aspect of windsurfing.

But, respect to each person for their own buzz addiction.

30 knots is 55.6 km an hour, and not so hard to do. My peak is 65.6 kn/h (which is 35.3 knots), and that was on dead flat water, with slalom gear, in 27 knots of wind. Happy to compare speeds though.

Rather than compare outright speed - it would be more interesting/fairer to compare speed effiency ie. Board speed/wind speed.
therefore Hardie had 35.3knt board/27kntwind = 1.3074 effiency rating.
