Hi all ,the only bit of kit I’ve not updated for a while (about 15years) is my ezzy mast 370 & 400 and got my thinking would they make any noticeable difference with my newer ezzy sales I’ve upgraded every few years . Does an older carbon mast not bend or react like a new one?
just to add my mast are never left rigged or out in the sun.
Thanks

They lose a little bit of response but nothing to worry about for rec windsurfing 😁 !

I doubt you would notice much if any difference, therefore I would suggest putting the funds towards something noticeably better such as a new board, sail or a slim grip carbon boom if you don't yet have one.
My ezzy masts are the same age and still going strong...

I've had my masts since 1996, that makes them 30 years old, and they've had hard use, many catapults, broken helmets, smashed booms, ripped harnesses even had them jammed into the reef, with board and sail dangling getting hit by waves. They still rig my speed sails beautifully. Admittedly they are extremely good masts, but I suspect Ezzys are also good masts.

I've worked on the principle if it ain't broke and the sail rigs well on it, then don't replace it.

... and never try anyone else's gear in case it feels better 😂

nahhh. I've got 15 year old race masts still going strong.

Would only replace them if you were going up in carbon content to get more performance.

Yeah those kids have to get through uni.

i think you need at least three of each for a proper amount of redundancy. I mean, you might snap 2 in the space of 6 months.

Probably not an issue with these masts, but NP slightly reduced the diameter of their SDM masts at one point and then the sails were also made to work with the slightly reduced diamter mast. I did not realise this at first and found my newer sails were not rotating on the cams well and researched and found this info out and got a new mast and the sail now rotates beautifully. The sails seems to rig nicely on the old masts still in terms of sail shap etc. but the cam just had a lot of resistance.

Funny you should say that…i’ve had to stock up on 5.6m s1 pro’s. Can never find them when needed.

Yep.... I got a late model (24?) V8 6.2 and 7.2 and both seemed to rig well on my old masts but would not rotate well. I knew nothing about the change and may not have gotten the sails if I did know. I ended up replacing my 430 and 460 with later masts and all good now. But I really only stuck with the NP V8s when I got them as I figured I had the matching masts so should get NP sails. Then I had to change the masts anyway! I get everything used anyway, so cost was bearable.

You now have a very nice sail and mast combo. When its windy , I give them a lot of downhaul, even though I'm heavy. Then they feel light for a cammed sail.

Yeah, I like the setup. The 6.2 works realy well and have used it in up to about 30 knots up to around 35knot 2s on Botnay Bay. I do have some issues with tuning the gear so I am not pulling my front foot out of the strap. Not sure if that is my technique or something not working well with my equipment. I can tune to avoid that, but involves base forward and boom down which stops the board flying as well.

If they aren't bent, I wouldn't bother. These are RDM right ?

I suspect that when old sailors told me when I was a beginner: "rig up, sail for 30min, come, in and add more downhaul", it was their ferrule getting a bend in it; was the issue with their rigs.

Brought my first Ezzy mast at the start of the year. Very happy with it. The up-side-down ferrule seems a stronger design to me.

Yes it’s the RDMs ,definitely the longest owned but of kit, really well used and I haven’t noticed any bends.

I think Severne did something similar at one stage?
