G'day Guys

Newbie to this forum and would like to say Hi. Moving to Kalbarri next month and wondering where to sail up there other than the river. Has anyone sailed Jakes or anywhere like that before.

Cheers Mike

Not sure what the break is called, but at the river entrance there was a left hander, very sailable, but couldnt see if the the reef was sucking dry or not. You'd only be a few hours (edit: in a porsche)drive from Gnaraloo tho..

6 or 7 hour drive to Gnarloo ... might be a bit much for a day trip. The closer drive would be back to Coronation Beach. 1.5hrs at most.

Jakes point is usually in too much of a wind shadow to be comfortable to sail, although once you were out in the open water it would be ok (no waves tho).

The river mouth might be ok, but extremely dangerous, there's more boats sunk in that rivermouth than I can count on my fingers and toes.

Hey Mick

I was in Kalbarri recently. I had a look at the break at the river mouth and at Red Bluff (Jakes). There wasn't much swell at Jakes, but the wind was ripping from the edge of the water out.

Reef at the river openining was really appealing. But, I couldn't get my head around it. Seemed to be only a narrow gap to sail through to get out, then waves, then either really hard up wind to get back, or go downwind to the beach, walk across the sand and back into the river. Has anyone sailed it who can shed more light (perhaps clear it up for me also)

River wind seems to be best early (around 1-1:30pm) and gets lighter and more flukey as the afternoon gets older.

G'day

Ive been going to Kalbarri most of my life now. River is great for sailing up at Kalbarri good breeze most days. Just launch near the boat hire I hear the sand spit has been washed away from the floods so heaps more water too.

Ive seen people go through river mouth before ... although if anything happens out there theres no where to land in safe. Gero not to far away anyway.

Tozza.

Tozza, isn't the river only a few hundred metres wide? especially when considering the wind direction?

Not that that is a problem, just means pretty short runs. Good for gybing practice I guess.
