I start a job on the Burrup in a few weeks.
Any windsurfers up that way?
When does the season start up there?
Last time I was up there I didnt have my gear with me because it was a short stay but always saw kites at Hearsons.
I had a surf at Angel Island but wouldnt dare sail there on my own.
Whats the travel time/distance to Exmouth and Bluff/Gnaraloo?
Any info would help thanks fellas

Greeny i lived in Karatha for 18months back in 97/98. Angels has surf but dont hold your breath. There is wind but its mainly big gear for flat water type stuff.

I used to bolt down to exy twice a month when the swell was good(winter)for a surf and i sailed the bomie a fair bit.

It only took 6hrs from Karatha to get to yardies so its not that far.

Hope this helps, spewing i cant get uo that way this winter, bugger.
cheers Bender

Im gonna take it a month at a time. Its a FIFO. 4/1.
I want to do 3 shifts then see how my wife, kids and I feel.
I can stay as long as I want. Might do a year then take next summer off and windsurf then go back for the winter and repeat process

Hi Greeny
We have a couple of our crew living up in Dampier and most of the sailing is flat water stuff.
That said we heard a few whispers that the guys are looking to try out Angel as a wave sailing destination. They are armed with a high speed ski boat (40 knot machine) so the trip out to the island is pretty quick.. the only problem being if there is wind, its a pretty rough ride over/back.
From what we can make out there is plenty of room to rig and launch from the island itself but the wave zone could be very gusty/shifty due to the surrounding geography... still the guys are very keen but suspect it may well be a big floaty wave board or Freestyle wave spot.

A trip down to Exmouth/Yardies could well and truly be on the cards as well should the conditions line up with a weekend leave pass

Regards

when we lived up there, my dad would sail at back beach.
hearsons cove( for easterlies in winter) but take off near mangroves near parking area because it will be hard, when easterlies really strong withnel bay (but very rocky so be care full when launching). dampier harbor for the westerlies and south westerlies.

if you have a boat and wanna do wave sailing angel island is good, but go between angel and gidley islands, remember to park you boat in shark alee which is the water coarse between the two islands and on westerlies you can ride the waves off the sand bar.

if you want flat water, go to mallus island.

during cyclone season sams island will hold a 3 to 4 meter swell and with northerly winds, you can get epic wave sailing conditions there. but only if the cyclone is due north of karratha,. but for all these places you need a boat. if you like open ocean with wind swell lite house beach at point Sampson can be hard to take off but epic conditions for jumping.

and remember in sumer you need bigger sails coz the wind is so warm, in 25 to 30 knots you could still sail on a 6 or a 6.5 easily

Hey thanks Jords for the info on the area up there. Unfortunately I dont have a boat but will find someone at work with one.
The only places I really sussed out when I was up there last was Hearsons, Dampier Harbour, and Sampson. This time I will have my own car up there so exploring will be what I will do other than work
