This morning at breakfast I saw a couple of windsurfers way way out on the water, and they were MOVING! They seemed to be going too fast, covering the whole horizon in seconds! When I got to Jibes (the windsurf centre) I asked someone about it, and that's when I learned that Kevin Pritchard is here! His sailing buddy is a Frenchman named Julien (that makes THREE Frenchmen named Julien at Jibe's now!), who seems quite fond of full planing freestyle moves, zooming around switch-stance in the straps, and doing 360s and heli-tacks while riding waves, that sort of thing... these two guys were testing prototypes for next year's Starboards today. They were hooning about on huge (6.7 or more) race sails on a definite 5m day!

It's nice to see some pros in action!! There's something awesome about seeing sailors of such a high level live and in person. And they looked like regular windsurf bums!

BTW I just want to say...I PASSED KEVIN PRITCHARD!!! But we were going in opposite directions - does that still count?

French blokes often have femine sounding names in English.

Clearly the knowledge that Vietnam is windy at this time of year is known around the traps.

I remember the thread posted by Wet Willy where he asked about a windsurfing holiday in Vietnam, posted average wind speeds of around 10 knots or less and many people poobared the idea of windsurfing in Vietnam.

Ha HAAA!!

Here's a brief summary of the situation here in Vietnam:

Wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind wind WIIIIIND!!!!!!

How I DREAM of a windless day! Ah, the peace, the serenity!! But NO!! I am to be denied!! Forced to live out this Groundhog Day scenario, endlessly repeating the same awesome day on the water!! With variations, of course...

The guy with Kevin Pritchard is Julien Quentel, I think. 2007 European Formula champion. No sign of them today, though. Their big bag of Starboard prototypes is still here - I'm not the type for industrial espionage, or else I might've taken photos of the boards...nahh, who knows what happens to spies in these communist countries??

The cool thing is, even though I first saw these guys sailing from very far away, it was immediately apparent that there was something remarkable about them.
