I'm looking at getting some second hand gear for light wind sailing. Where I live a good day is around 10-12 knots. I was wondering what the best type of board and sail would have been for this type of sailing in say the 2002 & 2003 years. I'm 80kg and 6'3".

Thanks

Hardy's got a formula rig for sale, that should get you flying along in 10 knots.
The sooner you buy it the quicker it gets out of my workshop!! (we're fixing a few minor dings)

You can get some really good formula gear really cheap, I saw brand new nitros 5's for $650 a while ago. If your on the east coast check out the classifieds page on www.windsurfingnsw.com.au theirs heaps of good quality kit going cheap there.

mattn where abouts are you, there is some good other gear getting round to get you easily going in 10-12 knots without going to the hastle of getting formula gear which imo is only good if you decide to race that class.

10-12 is easy to get planing in, remember world cup guys were racing in 8knots start line 6 knots race before the formula gear came in and they were up to 90kg. I know of alot of people that can get planing in 8 knots, a pre formula course or XL freeride board and up to a 9m sail and you will have no problems at all. I feel 9m is a bit big though but it depends on the width of the board.

You could get formula gear but it is hard to rig, hard to carry and for me at least I would have twice as much fun sailing a cat. Although the stuff is going cheap at the moment you should factor in for a carbon booms and a few masts as you are putting maximum strain on equipment at the sizes used. I'm not anti formula the gear goes terrific upwind and gets along quite fast (I've seen sean-aus120? lead a powerboat for some time) but there is alot of downsides for the small number of advantages.

Besides sometimes planing isnt everything.
