I've just moved to Melbourne (SE 'burbs) and dying to get out on the water. Anyone got any local knowledge, tips etc on the best Melbourne spots they'd like to share? I'm intermediate/advanced, mostly flat water or chop, and have ventured into waves on a few occasions. I don't know anyone here :-( so I'd love to hook up with some locals.

beaches brighton through to portmelbourne seem to get the best seabreezes.
you'll find most crew at greenhead, elwood and st kilda if u wanna make some buddies.
if u like flatwater make sure you go to sandypoint 200km away near wilsons prom.

Riogirl , Stacks of places on the bay for good sailing .Nearer to the city try Elwood , Dendy Street Brighton or Beaumaris Yacht Club on a Southerly and Green Point Brighton on a Northerly . Always some crew around to point you in the right direction .
There is good Ocean sailing an hour or so's drive . Plenty of options .
Drop into RPS in Elwood or SHQ in Sandringham for any advice .

Green Point (end of South Road) Brighton is ON RIGHT NOW! 20-25kts, gusting t0 30. Best spot for this direction.
Don't type, just get out there NOW.
I'm off for a sail.

Sensational. A good 25kts+. Spent more time in the air that on the water, the ramps were so good. I even pulled off my first "out of the straps" forward. Much softer landing than practicing on the beach. I'm getting there. Trust me, everyone will know when I pull off a real one.
It started getting more variable strength and direction-wise towards mid-afternoon, dropping out at about 4:00pm so several of us ended up swimming in, which is never a good way to end a session, but otherwise it was a ripper of a day.
Hmmm. time for another Neurofen.

Hey RioGirl,
Welcome to Melbourne! Lots of good spots in the bay - most of them already mentioned.
Here are some (not all) of the best:
N-NW: Green Point in Brighton. If it's really cranking then Rye at the bottom of the bay is really good.
W: Ricketts point in Beaumaris is AWESOME. Can also sail Green Point
SW-S: (summer seabreeze) Dendy St in Brighton or Elwood.
SE-E: Ricketts Point - don't go anywhere else!
NE: Point Cook on the western side of the bay
There is a group of really dedicated girls who sail around Brighton who are always looking to add to their crew. Head into SHQ Boardsports in Sandringham and introduce yourself.
Make sure you head down to Sandy Point over the Melbourne Cup weekend - it's great fun with awesome sailing and heaps of windsurfers to meet.
See you on the water!

I second the Melbourne Cup weekend... Really good atmosphere for meeting other sailors.
