It's a bit like saying a V8 supercar or 4WD or WRX is heavier than a dirt bike. Sure it is - but one is designed for different things than the other. The Kona can be chucked around like a slalom board, yet in light winds it's a good OD racer or cruiser or learning platform or freestyle board or whatever.
I went out on a longboard int he surf for the first time for so long I'm embarrassed. I went out after work, when the kites were coming in. Had a ball. Sure, it didn't chuck around like a waveboard, but the whole cruising along a little wave into the sunset thing was hard to beat as a way to let off steam. It was surprising how the big ole' beast cruised through the whitewater - and that was on a Wally, not a "real" wavesailing longboard.
I may actually get back into wavesailing, because I can take the longboard and go out and have fun in the waves even if it's too light for the waveboard. I had a look at the Naish and Starboard, they looked to be a lot better in surf (which fits in with what Jeffrey henderson says and he's the authority in these things AFAIK).
"Course, I'm biased as a Wally (and everything else) sailor.
