Sounds like the guy hit was very lucky. Many years ago (15 or so) a man was killed at Thompsons beach at Victoria Point, Qld. Same scenario, he gybed in front of a closely following sailor who had no time to react. The nose of the board came into contact with the mans ribs and he died.
I'm amazed at the number of top sailors (even some pro's) that attend a certain east coast wavesailing competition series who seem to have no idea that they're gybing into the path of others...
happend to me about 8 times on the weekend, each time I had to change course.
