Hi all, I have been building an iPhone app called OnWind for my own sessions and it has got to the point where I would be glad of some other people trying it at their spots, it is free, there is no account to set up and nothing is being sold.

It takes the forecast models and the nearest weather station for your spot and blends them into one answer against the wind range you set, so it tells you on now, not yet, too light or offshore rather than leaving you to add up the numbers, then it scores each model against what the station measured so the forecast for your beach improves the more it is used. It also tracks a session by GPS with the screen off, and from that it works out top speed, best 10 seconds, the speed sailing categories, gybes and tacks, time on the foil and which kit you were on, so over a season you can see what is working.

It is a beta so there will be things that are wrong, I ride in Sydney so that is where it has had the most use and I am not sure how well it goes elsewhere, the measured wind is strongest in Australia with other countries covered where their weather services publish stations. It is iPhone only for now and needs iOS 17 or later.

To get it tap this link on your iPhone, it will ask you to get Apple’s TestFlight app first and then installs OnWind, updates come through on their own after that: testflight.apple.com/join/qmHQZWyD

There is more about it with screenshots here: faispace.com.au/onwind

Feedback can go on the issues and ideas board inside the app under More, or to [email protected]. If you give it a go, can you let me know whether the verdict matched what you found on the water?

NSK, does the session gps tracking require the phone being with you on the water, or can it take gps data off a Garmin watch?

Hi, at the moment it does need the phone with you on the water, the tracking runs off the phone’s own GPS so I carry mine in a waterproof pouch, it keeps recording with the screen off and there is a lock button so nothing gets pressed by accident. It can’t take the data off a Garmin yet, I am looking at whether it can read an activity file exported from Garmin Connect so a session recorded on the watch shows up the same as one recorded on the phone, not sure yet how well that will work so I would rather not say it is coming until I have tried it. Which Garmin do you have, and would you be able to send me an exported activity to test with?

I will also be adding an Android version of the app in the next week

OnWind: a new Performance section

The new part, and the reason for this post, is Performance.

Track a session with the phone in your pocket or pouch and it works everything out on the phone, nothing uploaded:
- Speed results the GPS speedsurfing way: 2 s peak, best 10 s, 5 × 10 s, 100 m, 500 m, nautical mile, alpha 500.
- Gybes and tacks counted against the wind at that moment, and how much speed each turn kept. For foilers, a take-off funnel: attempts, near-flights, held flights, build-up time, touchdown recoveries, full stops and swims.
- A speed polar by angle off the wind, where your take-offs start, port against starboard, upwind ground made.
- Which sail, board and foil set-up (down to track position and shim) flies most in which wind, and a;
- Like-for-like comparison when only the board changed.Sessions can also come in from an Apple Watch, Garmin, Strava or COROS, via Health or a GPX/FIT file.

It’s new and I’d like it tried by people other than me, on other kit and other water.

Open beta on TestFlight: testflight.apple.com/join/qmHQZWyD. Install Apple’s TestFlight app first, then the link does the rest. Tell me what’s wrong, what’s right, and what you’d want it to measure, through the Issues and ideas board in the app or here.

Headline: distance, top speed, sessions, gybes and tacks, speed progression.Take-off: foiling totals, the attempts → near-flights → held funnel per session, flight quality table.

Stops, water time and turns, and the building-and-flying bands.Speed polar and where near-flights started.

Speed against the wind, by wind strength, and the sails compared.Near-flights against the wind and the like-with-like board comparison.

I always found recording a session for KA72 on the phone gave me some dodgy results, like speeds I was not capabale of reaching. Looks like you've sorted the session import from the Garmin watch, so I'll give it a go.

Hi HodgeHeg,

Many thanks, I am also looking into a cheap board mount sensor that will ensure accurate foiling time and direction as it currently reads based on speed and acceleration from the phone. I have found that when pumping or moving your body more than usual it can impact the results.

Will keep all posted
