Urgent Information
This STATE of HAWAII bill will kill the windsurf business and could shut down sailing from our beaches, private land or public! (as if Vacation rentals wasn't bad enough!)

Please write a simple e-mail stating you oppose it.

Testimony may be emailed if less than 5 pages in length, to the Legislature's Public Access Room at [email protected]. Please indicate to which committee the testimony is being submitted and the date and time of the hearing.

From all i've heard of the place i have no desire to go there...BUT BEWARE AUSTRALIA!!!!!! These sorts of rules comming to a beach near you Slowly but surely your freedoms are being eroded.The "NO ...." and "By order of ...." signs are getting more and more plentyfull....

Maui is the best windsurfing destination I have ever been too, would be such a shame to have the opportunity to sail there taken away.

Spent two weeks there in July '06. Was the best holiday I have ever had. Such great place to sail! Total windsurfing paradise... Heaps of wind, sunshine, tropical blue water and pretty friendly locals. Would be such a shame to lose this spot.

Stribo: Agree with the increasing proliferation of DON'T signs. It's actually quite ironic. We Australian's regard ourselves as so laid back, in reality we are nearly one of the most rule driven countries on the planet. Shame really.

We were there in June 06 for two weeks! best holiday ever!

Not sure about this one. 200 feet is 61 metres. When I sail I don't like it when Kiters pop jumps upwind of me. I can imagine if I was a swimmer I'd be even less enthused. But I have never been to Maui so have no idea how it would work in practice. I suppose it wouldn't take too many swimmer/surfers at a beach to exclude Kites and Sail boarders completely.

This is the issue, Hookipa already has a 10 surfers = no sailing rule on the main break, Kanaha has a no sailing before 11am rule that is self regulated, works a treat. With these new rules one person in the sea will mean 120 odd metres of beach will be unusable! Kanaha is a long beach, but not that long.

PS: Kanaha also has a roped off area for general swimming, why cant this be enough?

End of November 06. Great place. Great sailing. On both sides. Great health food shop. Excellent/value for money windsurfing hire. Would be a shame.

I'm most bumbed off about not being able to rent our great house at sprecks this year. Sounds just like Manly council . Maui the retirement village!!!!

never ceases to amaze me, the inteligence of politicians. especially over there. I wonder if those same peanut pollies ever look up the coast around Kanaha and realise that each one of those "dangerous" sails and kites each brings $5000US to the maui economy each year. I wouldnt be surprised if they pass the bill, especially after what I saw there last year, nothing would surprise me.

Most of the politicians would live on Oahu so they will not be affected by a loss of revenue due to less windsurfing tourists going there. They are probably eying the possibility of upmarket tourism and cashed up retiries moving there too. This is despite the fact that windsurfer tourists probably spend more money while they are there than a couple who spend all their time at a five star resort.

What is interesting is AFAIK windsurfing has been very popular on Maui since the early eighties. So beaches there have over twenty five years of windsurfing. However it sounds like in the last few years windsurfers are suffering restrictions and are unable to access the water.

Why is this so? Are there more beach users now than what there used to be? Are windsurfers acting like inconsiderate idiots on the water? Whats the deal?

This hardly surprising for the US, apparently in Hawaii you can be fined if you dont own a boat, check out the other parts to this vid for other crazy laws they have



I wonder if windsurfing from the beach 'violates the the rights and liberties gauranteed under the Hawaii State Constitution'???

Spotty, I have checked with my US based colleagues, and apparently it is permissable to not own a boat, so long as you are carrying a gun...

What crap, I was in Maui also in 2006, what a great place. The place is a buzz.

I was surfing the net on Friday and could not believe what I was reading on maui surf report site.

Windsurfing needs Maui and we need it.

Unfortunately there is no indication of when it is to be deferred until; hopefully at least until after July!

We should all be concerned about any place being closed to windsurfing regardless of whether we like it ourselves or would ever want to go there, let alone it being the birthplace of our obsession.

The fact that I am going in July has absolutely nothing to do with it!

Windsurfing spirit aye... after spending four seasons on lancelin beach ( and i mean every single day) you tend to get a little spoilt
