Whats the best wind direction for getting to Green Island just out from Manly? I havent done the run there before, but with the right wind strength and direction I think I would like to give it a go soon.

A good SE'er you can sail there in one reach, needs to be pretty good though as there is a bit of a wind shadow. I would look at going around high tide mark otherwise it can be a little bit of a walk and is a bit reefy.

Oh and dont fall in the channel that goes around the north-north west of the island, scary place

Hobie,

On the next good SE'er at Manly I will follow you out. There a few who regularly sail out to Green and back. It is even possible to sail around Green (great experience).

As MK7 notes it is best on a mid to high tide. The Channel between Green and St Helena can have quite a current on the outgoing tide and in addition there is a significant wind shadow from the island, that means you really need to be about half way between Green and St Helena to keep on the plane.

There is dead coral reef for about 450-500m off green island that can be a problem at low tide.

The good aspect is thjat the wind is usually 2-5 knots stronger than at Manly and the water much cleaner.

It is good practise to be able to complete the Manly to Wello run (on a NE) before you try Green Is. Green is slightly further.

Hi drjukka,

Ive done the Manly to Wello trip once before although that was back when I was still sailing my old long board. I think your right, would be good to do the Manly-Wello run a couple of times expecially on my short board. I definately dont want to be doing Green Is on my own the first time round. I know its probably not far for you more exp guys, for me its certianly a long run and in unknown waters can be a little daunting I guess at first.

Hi Hobie, the Manly-Green Is. run only takes about 10min in the right conditions. So when the winds become more consistent, and the sun is shining, you will find several Manly boys doing the run in a group. Last summer I did the return trip 7 times one arvo. Only a calf cramp to worry bout as you lock into the straps in the one position.

Manly to wello is certainly the safer trip, if you break anything you are relatively safe and if you lose anything you've got a good chance of getting it back. Wind is also pretty much consistent, drops off a little behind king island. Be careful if you sail across and you get to king on normal reach and then broad reach down to wello, it can make it a bit challenging pointing back to manly.

Someone years ago broke a UJ or something sailing to green, ditched the rig then tried to swim to wello (I think it was Dave M's gear?). He arrived there late at night, if it was me there'd be a trail of brown water all the way from green to wello.

When you do sail there make sure someone knows you're out there. If you break something i'd swim to the island and spend the night, it's not all that unpleasant there with some nice swimming spots around the back. Dave, I and a few others have done a couple of day/night trips over there- cooked food on the corrogated iron scraps and stuff... mmm healthy.
