Being bored one day, I tried this with the Ezzy RDMs I have. Ezzy only recommend that when doing this that the tip is the longer length, and the base the shortest.
I rigged my sails using the normal masts, then the longer tip/shorter base combo, and then the shorter tip with longer base combination.
The shorter tip with longer base did not work very well at all. The shapes of the sails were all wrong, and the cammed sails would not rotate. The longer tip with shorter base looked the same as the correct/equal length masts.
Even though you are going to use NP masts, (and it sounds like they are meant to match ferrule sizes, based on Bender's link) I think you will run into the same problem, where the longest section needs to be for the top and the shortest for the bottom. I expect the reverse will not work at all.
Agree that long top/short bottom combo would be best, though info below on peterman.dk website (Benders link) indicates that reverse would still be ok for NP sails if you can cope with the mast being even more flex-top than normal:
Now, because the Neil Pryde X6 mast series is placed in one end of the bend curve scale (with soft tops), this means that there are limits to the otherwise great potential of the masts, as one of the options (bottom from the longer mast/top from the shorter mast) generally grows way too Flex Top for all other sails but Neil Pryde. The other option (bottom from the shorter mast/top from the longer mast) has a great chance of covering the needs of sails from other companies. I've tested the X6 cross-fit over many years using a 430 base & 400 top with NP sails under 5.4m. Worked great in a 4.7 Combat with std fixed head but tried the same combo in a 4.4 Combat that had an adjustable head fitted and was terrible!
