Hi all
just got myself a new 4.4 NP core , is it worth spending the money on an x6 mast or should I just go 30% carbon x3, will it make that much difference to the way the sail feels or rigs, be interested to here your opinions

What size mast is that sail needing? 400? X6 maybe ok in that size, but after extensive use of X6 460 and 520, I would not recommend them to anyone who is sensitive to a good or bad feeling sail performance. In my opinion, they are too heavy, lack power and are unresponsive. There's also a build quality issue and a small design flaw which will do considerable damage to the bottom section of the mast. This, however is easily rectified if small mod is done early. Granted they are cheaper than the next model up but probably they are still expensive cos they are NP.Having said all that, a lot of people are happy with their X6's.

Personally I think wave sails are far less 'picky' about what masts they rig on compared to race sails. That said NP sails do have a weird habit of not working on anyone else’s masts.

I'd say a 4.4 rigs on a 400? At this size I don't reckon you'll notice the difference between an x3 or an x6, except with your hip pocket. The x3 might also be a little more durable in the waves. If you are going to be doing a lot of wave sailing i'd also consider a skinny, particularly if you can use it with more than just this sail (cost justification). I've broken quite a few SDM masts and since changing to skinnies for the waves not one, I've never looked back.

The 4.4 requires a 400 mast, what is the problem with x6 masts and what masts do you like for wave sails, I,m a pretty average sailer on the wave board , still coming to terms with the volume. Most of my sailing is in Port Philip bay so maybe I should take cjw,s advice and save some money and go x3 30% carbon , at my standard of sailing I might not even notice a difference

Yep, I'd say get an X3, it'll be fine. My 400 is only 30% and it's good enough for wave sails.

Hmm... I dont know about that. I wont use a 30% again after using a 100%. I suggest trying each before you buy. Or if you're short of cash get a second hand one.

I know what you mean NotWal. I'm finding the same thing with freerace sails - once you've had 100% carbon, it's very hard to go back.

You've got to remember though that a 4.4m wave sail is not a 6+ metre race sail. It's a far more elastic/forgiving concept and as such you don't notice the difference between masts as much. I'm not saying you won't, just that it's nowhere near as pronounced. I totally agree that with bigger freerace sails you want 60% as an absolute minimum. If you're going to spring for a high carbon content mast, make it a skinny. You'll regret it otherwise if you like taking on large surf :)

Thanks for the different opinions guys, I went for the x3, I figure on my biger sails I still run the x3 masts so until I can aford a complete upgrade in masts I'll stick with them , Now we just need the winter NW to start .
