Can anybody tell me why masts cost so much compared to other windsurfing products, are they high in labour to make or are we just getting ripped off ?

I think masts are priced appropriately when you consider the 'hierachy' of windsurfing equipment costs and performance.

1 Boards (most expensive and most critical for performance)
2 Sails
3 Masts
4 Booms
...and so on

While masts are failry simple products they use a lot more carbon than that of a carbon boom. I'm guessing here but the technology required to achieve the constant curve accuretely as well as the R&D envolved in matching a mast to a particular sail would increase costs, especially above that of a boom. That's my best guess anyway, maybe an expert on the matter could chip in?

It's like surfboards

Everyone complains about the price until they have to make one.

What're you talking about? $600 for a mast is cheap compared to some of them. Most race masts are $1000 or more, and the larger NP ones are $1500 retail!

The NP race ones are so expensive 'cause you have to pay for 2. The one you bought originally and then the replacement they give you for "free" when the first one breaks rigging.

I just bought an new Neil Pryde for $300. 20% carbon I think.
It seems to do the job.

Elmo is spot on. Just try making one yourself for that price.
Supply and demand I suppose.

Well I make all my own boards and fins, have made a few booms, played with sails. But I wouldn't contemplate making a mast, ( well apart from a few shortlasting fantasies). Frankly I wouldn't know where to start, guess I could figure it out with trial and error, but something tells me by the time Igot it right I could have bought more masts than I'm ever going to use.

I'm convinced that the exorbitant cost of windsurfing masts has a subconscious affect on your average poley.
Approach to wavesailing can be restrained not by fear of injury alone,
but also by the threat of severe pain to the hip-pocket nerve.
Affluent crew and sponsored sailors charge the waves snapping masts with gay abandon,
while their more cautious self-funded peers on a shoestring budget think twice before smacking that pitching lip.
That off-the-lip that descends into a train-wreck down the mineshaft can cost plenty.
But don't wimp-out you pussies, bitchslap that peak, it's only money.
hahahahah

Can you now explain all the kiters' great aversion to hitting the lip hard?

When I saw a 'dope on a rope' at their local, they were nowhere near hitting the lip! A wave that went from the point to the bay they spent the whole time infront of the wave on the flats and when they did get anywhere near the shoulder, they passed it, then attempting a cutback, only to produce big spray from digging in their edge and comming to a stop, repeating the whole process over again, over a 300 to 500 metre distance

'slave,
you seem to be on a mission to convert windsurfers to kitesurfing.
whilst your posts are amusing (and by all means keep em coming)
don't you think that followers of any given sport may do it because of the rush or satisfaction each individual wants to achieve!
equipment is a byproduct. the sport is the drive.
maybe you should think of doing both again!
nothing like a balanced opinion.
as someone said "there's nothing worse than a reformed smoker!

Wrong.
Converting poleys into kiters is not my goal.
Far from it.
The opposite in fact.
My local pointbreak would become a fucn zoo with more strings.

Spread the anti-hype.

Isn't it amazing how practically EVERY topic on this forum gets hijacked and turns into a slugg fest between windsurfers and kitesurfers?

No it doesn't. Its only the one disgruntled knob who wished he could still windsurf.
Every other kiter seems to mind their own business.

Hijacked ??
I'm afraid you're mistaken, Garynoel.
Read my post.
Yeah, the post that refers to the exorbitant cost of windsurfing masts.
The post that is directly on-topic.
No hijack, jack.
Unlike your off-topic, trouble-making reply.

Hi waveslave
When I break a mast I just go 2 the first aid box and wrap myself up in as many bandages as I can find, then head 2 the local shopping centre and beg.
Its amazing how sorry people feel for you. So smack that lip as hard as u can.
As I say "go off or get off".

Good masts are expensive.
Bad masts are cheap.
Expensive masts are not always as good as they might seem.
Cheap masts may not be bad, but they tend to be.
And ya can't trust easy answers
They're just answers that mislead.

I've tried cheap n nasty.
I've tried expensive too.
You have to be discriminating
Thats what I conclude.
So I'm savin all my bikies
And I'm workin day and night
And when I've got a pile of dough 20 stories high
I'm gonna buy a real mighty mast the envy of the crew.
One thats made of bucky tubes n real expensive glue
And good vibes and fairy dust n tons n tons of smiles
And when I find it, if youre very nice,
I'll let you have a ride.

I s'pose they only break if you get caught where you shouldn't be.
For five seasons I've only bought used masts and had a heap of fun on them. The change to new ($300 NP X3) was due to 2nd hand mast snapping when downhauling 5.4 hard on a cranking day (in hindsight, it was on it's way out anyway, "one more session then I'll spend the dough...")
I would have gladly paid $300+ on the spot for a new mast to get out there.
Horses for courses?! $300 worth of fuel would get my mate's boat out only a few times...
